Mary Virginia Bolton
1925-2004
MCKENZIE: Services for Mary Virginia Bolton, 79,
were at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 19 at Eastwood
Baptist Church in McKenzie with Rev. Gaylon King and
Jeff Crabtree officiating.
Mrs. Bolton, retired employee of Bethel College Grill,
died Saturday, October 16 at McKenzie Regional Hospital
from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born September 3, 1925 in Sidonia to the late
Lockie Perry King and Jackie King. She was a member of
the Eastwood Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Dwayne (Linda) Bolton of
McKenzie; a daughter, Diane (Gary) Walker of Trezevant;
a brother, Homer King of Charlotte, Michigan; three
sisters, Lorraine Kanupp of Knoxville, Ruth Arnold and
Wanda Staggs, both of Gleason; five grandchildren, Lisa
Horner of McKenzie, Jessie Walker of Greenfield, Laura
Gordon of Thompson Station, Jason Walker of Henry and
Amanda Matlock of McKenzie and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Bolton; two
brothers, Alvin King and Oscar King and two sisters,
Lucille Horton and Mozelle Wilson.
Brummitt Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Dr. John Walter Winters
1923-2004
MCKENZIE: Memorial services for Dr. John Walter
Winters, 81, were conducted on Sunday, October 17 at
2:00 p.m. at the McKenzie Church of Christ.
Dr. Winters died Tuesday, October 12 at the McKenzie
Regional Hospital.
He was born January 1, 1923 to the late John Wesley and
Bessie Naomi Drown Winters. He was a professor at
Tennessee Tech and a former professor at Bethel College.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Jerald Lawrence
Winters and Dale Eldon Winters.
Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Mrs. Julia
Ruffell Winters; two daughters, Frances Elaine Musser of
Glen Carbon, Illinois and Mildred Ann Morris of
Huntingdon; one son, James Carl Winters of Spokane,
Washington; five grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.

Mabel Davidson Johnson
1932-2004
GLEASON: Services for Mabel Davidson Johnson, 71,
were at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 19 at Gallimore
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Bullock
officiating. Burial was in Hopewell Cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson, retired employee of Henry I. Siegel, died
Sunday, October 17 at Jackson-Madison County General
Hospital.
She was born November 23, 1932 in Trenton to the late
Leon and Ruth Ann Hubble Ward. She was a member of the
Jolly Springs Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Donny Davidson and Larry
Johnson, both of Gleason; three daughters Peggy Daniel
of Gleason and Bonnie Darnell and Dianne Collins, both
of Springville; a brother, William Thomas Ward of
Gleason; a sister, Shirley Bynum of Sharon; six
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Lottie B. Rawls
1916-2004
PARIS: Services for former Henry County School
System worker Lottie Bell Rawls, 88, were at 2:00 p.m.,
Saturday, October 16 at Ridgeway Funeral Home with Jerry
Drye officiating. Interment followed in the Olive Branch
Cemetery near Cottage Grove.
Mrs. Rawls died on Wednesday, October 13 at the Henry
County Medical Center.
She was born July 5, 1916 in Whitlock to the late Barney
and Valcus McClure Crawford. She was the widow of James
Leonard “Pod” Rawls, who died June 6, 1989. She was a
member of the Henry Baptist Church and cafeteria
supervisor at Henry School for 16 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Joy Brisendine of
Paris, Sue Turpen of Clarksville and Betty Jackson of
New Port Richie, Florida; three sons, Kenneth Rawls and
Mark Rawls, both of Paris and Charles Rawls of McKenzie;
two sisters, Pauline McDaniel of Florissant, Missouri
and Mae Hughes of River Rouge, Michigan; one brother,
Franklin Crawford of Mansfield; eight grandchildren; and
three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Rawls, who
died in 1969 in the Vietnam Conflict and two sisters,
Adell Carrington, who was her twin and Rose Pace.
Jacob Earl Nobles, Sr.
1917-2004
PARIS: Services for Jacob Earl Nobles, Sr., 87, were
at noon, Saturday, October 17 at Trinity Funeral Home
with the Rev. Gene Fowler officiating. Interment
followed in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Nobles died on Tuesday, October 12 at the Henry
County Medical Center.
Born in Vanceboro, North Carolina on September 26, 1917,
he was the son of the late Issac and Cora Flagan Nobles.
He was married in 1943 to Henrietta Cox Novels, who
preceded him in death. He served as a military policeman
in the U.S. armed forces.
Survivors include four daughters, Nina C. Travis and
Henrietta Holmes, both of Paris, Shirley Taylor of Henry
and Linda Deppy of Detroit; two sons, Jacob E. Nobles,
Jr. of Paris and Bobby E. Craven of San Antonio, Texas;
one sister, Lucille Nobles of Newbern, North Carolina;
one brother, Ledrew Nobles; nine grandchildren, 13
great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren;
one foster great-grand and nieces, nephews and cousins.
Harold Vernon Howard
1923-2004
ATWOOD: Services for Harold Vernon Howard, 81, were
conducted on Sunday, October 17 at 2:00 p.m. in the
Dilday Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Loyd Rich and
Brother Jimmy Ellis officiating. Interment followed in
the Sellers Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Howard died on Thursday, October 14 at the
Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
He was born January 14, 1923 in Ohio to the late John
and Sarah Thacker Howard. He was an employee of the
steel mill and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He
was preceded in death by his wife, Alta Howard.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Harderson of
Decatur County; one son, Donald Howard of Ohio; six
stepchildren, Bonnie and George Bucy of Atwood, Lola and
Johnny Webb of Camden, Jane and Otis Gurley of Beech
Bluff, Lou Laudermilk of Milan, Earlene Sibley of Murray
City, and Gordon and Andrea Quinn of Westport; two
sisters, Helen Royster and Ethel Climmer, both of Ohio;
one brother, Clifford Howard of Oklahoma; six
grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 37
step-grandchildren and 19 step-great-grandchildren.

Vivian Lucille Webb Scott
1910-2004
BRUCETON: Services for Vivian Lucille Webb Scott,
94, were at Saturday, October 16 at 11:00 a.m. in the
east visitation room of Dilday Funeral Home with
Brothers Joe Ted Scott and Greg Plummer officiating.
Interment followed in the Prospect Cemetery.
Mrs. Scott died on Wednesday, October 13 at the Baptist
Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon.
She was born April 1, 1910 in Henry County to the late
John and Rosa Lee Brewer Webb. She was a homemaker and a
member of the Full Gospel Pentecostal Church. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Vernon K. Scott and a
son, Paul Scott.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Plummer of
Clarksville; five sons, Vernon A. Scott, Joe Ted Scott,
Robert Ned Scott, all of Bruceton, Darnell “Sad” Scott
of Camden and Kiley W. Scott of Pineville, Kentucky; a
sister, Ruth Eubank of Nashville; 19 grandchildren; 29
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Anne Baker Bayless
1916-2004
BRUCETON: Services for Anne Baker Bayless were held
on Thursday, October 14 at Bruceton First Baptist Church
at 2:00 p.m. with Brother Terry Bradshaw officiating.
Interment followed in Prospect Cemetery.
Mrs. Bayless died on Monday, October 11 at St. Thomas
Hospital in Nashville.
She was born in Dickson on November 18, 1916 to the late
Will and Sally Baker. Her six siblings preceded her in
death. They were Lucy Baker Porch, her twin, Margaret
Baker Lancaster, Mildred Baker Russell, Francis “Bud”
Baker, Ernest Walton Baker and Tom Baker.
She served as supervisor at the HIS Company in Bruceton
for many years and later owned her own business, Anne’s
Fabrics.
She was married for 65 years to James Taylor “Jim”
Bayless, who preceded her in death on December 25, 2002.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in
Bruceton.
Survivors include two sons, Monte Bayless of Columbia
and Jim Taylor Bayless of Hermitage and four
grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Bruceton First Baptist Church’s
Faithful Workers Sunday School Class.
Marie Mertens
1932-2004
HENRY: Services for Marie Mertens, 72, were at 11:00
a.m., Monday, October 18 at Fedde-Helfinch Funeral Home
in Peotone, Illinois. Burial was in Skyline Memorial
Cemetery in Monee, Illinois. McKenzie Funeral Home was
in charge of the local arrangements.
Mrs. Mertens, a homemaker, died on Wednesday, October 13
at Henry County Medical Center in Paris.
She was born August 5, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois to the
late Mary Stefecek and Martin Stefecek. She was a member
of Amvets Women’s Auxiliary in Paris. She was a Lutheran
by faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Charmaine Mock and
Christaine O’Brien; three sons, James Vorreyer, Michael
Vorreyer and Robert Vorreyer; a brother, Martin Kluever;
eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Eulis Massey “Smokey” Milam
1919-2004
MCKENZIE: Services for Eulis Massey “Smokey” Milam,
85, were at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 16 at Cedar
Avenue Chapel in the McKenzie Funeral Home with the
Revs. John Pugh and Harrell Nation officiating.
Interment, with military graveside services, followed in
the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Mr. Milam, a retired truck driver for Dealer Transport,
died on Thursday, October 14 at McKenzie Regional
Hospital.
He was born February 27, 1919 in Henderson County to the
late Nancy Massey Milam and Jimmy Milam. He was a World
War II army veteran. He was a member of the First United
Methodist Church in Louisville, Kentucky.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Morris Milam; a
daughter, Margaret Hopper of Memphis; a son, Jimmy Milam
of Nashville; two sisters, Georgia Smith of Westport and
Norma Sue Cogdell of Jackson; three grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.
Mary Katherine Morgan
1933-2004
MCKENZIE: Services for Mary Katherine Morgan, 71,
were at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 19 at Cedar Avenue
Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home with the Rev. Alan Trull
and Dennis Trull officiating. Interment followed in
Carroll Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Morgan, a homemaker, died Sunday, October 17 at
Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
She was born June 29, 1933 in Hornbeak to the late
Pauline Nevils Edwards and J.B. Edwards. She was a
Baptist by faith.
Survivors include her husband, R.C. Morgan; three
daughters, Mary J. Quinones Sue Trull, and Christine
Robertson, all of McKenzie; three stepdaughters, Faye
Preasley, Retha Jamie Luna and Phalecia Marby, all of
McKenzie; two sons, Larry F. Robertson of McKenzie and
Richard Robertson of Paris; one stepson, Charles Morgan
of McKenzie; two sisters, Molly Morris of McKenzie and
Judy Hilliard of Dresden; two brothers, J.W. Edwards of
Clarksburg and Kenneth Edwards of Dresden; eight
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Kathy
Anderson.
R.A. James
1926-2004
MCKENZIE: Services for R.A. Jones, 78, were at 10:00
a.m., Tuesday, October 19 at Germantown Parkway Chapel
Funeral Home. Burial was in Memory Hill Gardens.
Mr. James, a retired utilities supervisor of Ellendale
Utility District, died on Saturday, October 16 at St.
Frances Nursing Home.
He was an elder at Brunswick Cumberland Presbyterian
Church and a member of McKenzie Senior Citizens.
Survivors include his wife, Jimmie Lou James; three
daughters, Betty Potts of Little Rock, Arkansas, Deloris
Fuller of Memphis and Cheriadeth Rutledge of McKenzie;
two sons, Clayton James of Brandon, Mississippi and
Larry James of Arlington; two sisters, Erma Higgins of
Reno, Nevada and Gertrude McCallum of Holly Springs,
Mississippi; a brother, Joe James of Williston; eight
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
