The soccer team scored its first victory in school
history against Jackson Christian School on April 6 by a
score of 1-0. Sophomore Caleb Owen scored the
game-winning goal in the first half. The victory was
preserved by the inspired play of goalie Jake Brown who
shut out the visiting Eagles. Last week the team resumed
play against the powerful squad from Martin Westview.
The home team held their own in the first half stopping
many of the Chargers' offensive shots. They trailed 1-0
at the mid-point. The beginning of the second half
proved to be disastrous as the visitors scored three
more goals to put the game out of reach. The eventual
5-0 defeat does not tell how well the young Rebels
checked their more experienced opponents. This week the
Rebels play at Liberty Magnet School in Jackson on
Tuesday.
The baseball team played in the Milan Physical Therapy
Tournament this week. In the first game on Thursday they
lost to Martin Westview - a team that they had defeated
earlier - by a score of 7-3. The second game proved to
be much better as they won against Henry County by a
score of 10-1. Drew Hayes pitched tremendously and
Jordon Trull and John French hit home runs to pace the
Rebels. On Friday, the team matched up with potent
Jackson South Side. Jordon Trull picked up the win in
the 8-6 contest with Drew Hayes registering the save.
The Rebels received strong offensive support from Mark
Ghyers who hit a game-winning grand slam home run in the
sixth inning. The Rebel win placed them in the
championship game against the host Milan Bulldogs. In
that game the Rebels faced a juggernaut of offense and
fell 13-3. The consolation finish may be a good omen for
the Rebels as they enter the last few weeks of the
season. This week the Rebels were scheduled to play
Camden on Monday (results not available), at Camden on
Tuesday, at West Carroll on Wednesday, at home against
Westview on Thursday, and at home against West Carroll
on Friday.
The softball team had two games last week after the
Spring Break. On Wednesday, the team easily outdistanced
Bruceton by a score of 6-1. Brittany Carpenter picked up
the win. On Thursday, the Lady Rebels faced district
nemesis Camden and fell 5-2. A shaky first inning put
the team in a hole that it was unable to overcome. This
week the Lady Rebels have several games beginning on
Monday at Huntingdon, at Milan on Tuesday, at Waverly on
Wednesday, and at home against South Fulton on Thursday.
On Tuesday, Ms. Doster plans to take 23 students to the
University of Tennessee at Martin Math Competition. This
yearly event gives our students a chance to compete with
schools across West Tennessee in a variety of math
subject areas including Algebra I and II, geometry, and
advanced math. Nine (9) freshmen, three (3) sophomores,
four (4) juniors, and ten (10) seniors will compete in
this year's contest. Good luck to them as they represent
our school.
This Thursday Ms. Herrin has arranged to have the Navy
Band from Millington, Tennessee, to perform for our
student body. This has become an annual event for the
students to relax and enjoy wholesome music performed by
some of America's finest young people. It is a quality
event.
Both the girls' and the boys' track team finished 4th
out of 7 teams in the USJ Small School Competition last
Thursday. Medal winners included Anna Trull with 4,
Renee Crawley with 2, and Sarah Hartz with 3. Earning a
single medal were Hope Wyder, Amber King, Katya
Kesterson, and Samantha Doster. Students receiving
medals finished in the top three in their event. Ribbon
winners (finishing in 4-6 places) were Brittany Russell,
Jessica Johnson, Danielle Mason, Rachael Clark, Brooke
Ridley, Brittany Lessenberry, and Kim Gaskins. For the
boys Shawn Luna had a first place in the shot put. James
Horton also earned a medal. Ribbon winners were Randy
Lacey, Kris Sydnor, Greg Pruitt, Jesse Owens, Marquice
Tharpe, and Daniel Duncan. This week the team travels to
Union City for the Rotary Club Track Meet there, an
event that always fields strong competition.
On Thursday at 7:00 P.m. Coach Joan Albury, the new
women's basketball coach of the Lady Rebels, will meet
with next year's team and the players' parents. This
meeting is an excellent time to meet the new head coach,
listen to her expectations and vision, and begin a new
era in Lady Rebel basketball to build on the solid
foundation that we have. The meeting will be in the gym
at 7:00 P.M. and should last about an hour.
The high school band competed in the UTM Solo Ensemble
last Friday. This contest is actually a ratings contest,
on a scale of 1 - 5 with 1 being superior (blue medal)
and 2 being excellent (red medal). McKenzie High School
Band had 32 entries, including individual solos, duets,
and trios. Our band was awarded 25 superior medals, and
7 excellent medals. No rating below a 2 was awarded. Out
of approximately 28 schools participating, MHS and one
other school were the only two schools to receive all
superior and excellent ratings.
The tennis team played Milan High School last Friday in
district competition. The girl's team faced a difficult
task against the skilled opponent and lost 9-0. The boys
won their first contest of the year by a score of 4-3.
Winners of their singles' matches were Daniel Duncan,
Cody Brown, and Justin Petering. Brown and Petering won
their double's match to secure the victory. The team
plays at Martin on April 26th.
School will not be in session on Friday. This will be
our annual Fish Fry Day. Our band will compete in the
parade, and our Miss McKenzie Royalty will also
participate in the parade.
