The soccer team played Liberty Tech Magnet High School
in Jackson last Tuesday in a close, competitive match.
The youthful Rebels lost 3-2 to the Crusaders. Jose
Becerra played well in the loss by scoring two goals.
The team's next game is a home contest against Trenton
on Thursday at 5:00 P.M. at the soccer field at Bethel
College.
In the UTM Math Contest last Tuesday, twenty (20)
students represented our school. Junior Randy Lacey
finished 10th in geometry. Seniors Andrew Cross and
Joseph Yu placed 6th and 3rd respectively in the
pre-calculus category. Congratulations to those students
for performing well in this contest against students
from across West Tennessee.
The baseball team played two games last week against the
Camden Lions in district action. On Monday the Rebels
could not generate a great deal of offense, but
prevailed behind the strong pitching of Drew Hayes for a
4-3 victory. Drew and Jake Smith hit back-to-back
doubles to seal the win in the bottom of the seventh
inning. On Tuesday, the Rebels traveled to Camden to
again test their district rivals. In a similar scenario,
the Rebels relied upon the pitching - this time of
Jordon Trull - to edge the Lions by a score of 3-1. The
two district wins put their district record at 2-4 and
their overall record at 10-12. This week the Rebels play
at Greenfield on Monday, at Stewart County on Tuesday,
at Huntingdon on Wednesday, and at home against Milan on
Thursday.
This Friday we will have our annual Awards Day at the
high school at 10:00. This event will recognize the
academic achievements of our students, their involvement
in many clubs and organizations, their competition
successes against other schools, a summary of our spring
sports, Who's Who in each academic class, and several
senior recognitions. We invite the public to attend this
celebration.
In softball action the team split two games last week.
On Monday, the girls defeated cross county rival
Huntingdon by a score of 8-7. Lauren Perritt picked up
the win with Brittany Carpenter getting the save.
Leading the 15-hit attack were Courtney Wiggins (3-4),
NiCole West (2-4), Brooke Cole (2-4), Jalisa Brown
(2-4), Courtney Creasy (2-4), and Carol Perritt (2-4).
On Tuesday, the hits were not as plentiful as the Lady
Rebels fell to the Milan Lady Bulldogs by a score of
5-4. The Lady Rebels did manage 9 hits. Jalisa Brown and
Brooke Cole both had 2 hits. The Lady Rebels now have a
record of 16-7 and a district record of 3-3. This week
the Lady Rebels play at Dresden on Monday, at home
against Riverside on Tuesday, at Lexington on Thursday,
and in the Waverly Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
We do have several upcoming dates of importance. On
Tuesday, April 27 and Wednesday, April 28, we will have
two end-of-course exams as mandated by the State
Department of Education. In accordance with Board
policy, the exams will count 15% of the second semester
grade. These two tests are not requirements for
graduation. They do figure heavily into the grade of the
course. On May 4-6, we will have our Gateway exams. We
will test on Algebra I, English II, and Biology I. These
tests will also count 15% of the second semester grade,
but are also required for graduation. Other important
dates include Baccalaureate (optional to attend) at
Bethel College on Sunday, May 9, at 8:00 P.M., and
Graduation on Friday, May 14, at 8:00 P.M. at the
McKenzie High School gymnasium.
The trap team had its 1st match at the Henry County Gun
Club on Saturday. The boys' team placed 2nd overall. In
individual scores, Carson Rider placed 1st and Lee
Russell took 3rd place. Samantha Doster won 1st place in
the girls' division. Amber King placed 2nd and Brittany
Lessenberry won 3rd place. Congratulations to these
students.
Last Friday the MHS Marching Rebels Band participated in
the Fish Fry Parade in Paris. They brought home four
trophies. They won 1st place for Band in the Red Class
competing against four other bands. The Guard won 1st
and Drum Major Kayla Bomar won 2nd Place. They also
brought home the Overall Grand Sweepstakes Trophy.
Congratulations to these students for a job well done.
