School began on a positive note last week as
approximately 370 students showed up for classes for the
2004-05 school year. On our 4x4 block schedule, students
will take eight courses during the year - four each
semester. Students seemed to adjust well to our schedule
and routine. Freshmen quickly learned the layout of the
building and the expectations of the faculty and staff.
All in all, it was a good start to the year.
The golf teams enjoyed success last week as they began
their season. The boys defeated Gleason and Greenfield
firing a school record 150 for the four best scores.
Jake Brown had a 36 to earn the medalist position.
Justin Wilson and Craig Broadbent both had a score of
37. None of the Rebel golfers shot over 40. The girls
lost to Gleason by one stroke. Kristi Petering led the
team with a 51. On Tuesday the boys golf team captured
two more wins over Huntingdon and Clarksburg. Beau Brown
shot a sizzling 35 to pace the Rebels. The girls
defeated Huntingdon to even their record to 1-1. Kristi
Petering was the medalist with a 46. Tish Brown shot a
56. This week the teams travel to Camden to play the
Lions on Tuesday. They play Huntingdon and Clarksburg on
Thursday at Carroll Lake Golf Course.
On Monday, August 23, the representative with QSP will
meet with the junior class to discuss magazine sales.
This fundraiser is the major one done by the class to
help finance the junior-senior prom and any other
expenses that the class may incur during the next two
years. Our sponsors and officers are discussing the
possibility of having prom off campus this year. In a
survey of the junior class last year, the students
indicated overwhelmingly that this was an option that
they wanted to explore. We are busy preparing a budget
summary to see the expense and the resources needed to
pay the anticipated expense. Students will begin selling
magazines on August 23. The selling of the magazines
will free them of any obligation to pay for prom.
Students are expected to sell 7 magazines for the class.
Last week students elected their class officers for the
2004-05 school year. Especially important are the junior
and senior officers. They direct the two classes in a
number of activities that lead to graduation. Serving as
an underclassman officer is a good learning experience
for developing the skills needed the last two years of
high school. Freshmen officers are as follows: Josie
Jarrett, president; Jana Barham, vice-president; Jessie
Townes, secretary-treasurer; Bethany Aden, reporter; and
Clint Kee, Student Council representative. The sophomore
class chose these students to serve as their officers:
Andrea Swan, president; Katya Kesterson, vice-president;
Anna Smith, secretary; Wendy Brown, treasurer; Laura
Perritt, parliamentarian; and Anna Trull, Student
Council representative. The junior class elected these
students to lead them in this important year of their
education: Courtney Creasy, president; Hunter Downing,
vice-president; Kayla Taylor, secretary; Rema Salameh,
treasurer; Brooke Cole, reporter; and NiCole West,
Student Council representative. Leading the seniors
through graduation are Rachael Clark, president; Carol
Perritt, vice-president; Kelly Fowler, secretary; Brandi
Burke, treasurer; Brittany Carpenter, reporter; and
Renee Crawley, Student Council representative.
Last spring Ms. Elam's Advanced English I class
submitted essays on the topic "What Can I Do About
School Violence." The high school recently received word
that Courtney Creasy had won second place in the state
for her essay and that she would receive a $200 prize
for her winning essay. Our school has made writing a
priority. We have seen our 11th Grade Writing Assessment
scores climb for the past four years. Courtney's winning
essay is further proof that our students are learning
this very important communication skill.
The football team will play in the first quarter of the
Huntingdon Jamboree this Friday at 7:00 P.M. All tickets
sold in advance will benefit McKenzie Rebel football.
Tickets at the gate are pro-rated for the eight teams.
The public and students may buy their tickets in the
high school office for $5.00. Our opponent will be the
Lexington Tigers. Also on sale in the front office are
advanced tickets to our regular season, home games for
the varsity, B-team, and freshmen schedules. The cost of
this ticket is $25.00. Our first home game is a region
contest against Camden on Friday, September 3. I
encourage everyone to purchase one of these tickets for
ease in getting into the games and a savings for
attending high school home games.
Coach Christina French begins her second year as head of
the cross country teams for boys and girls. Coach French
has several returning runners from last year's squad and
expects great improvement. The schedule has not been
finalized, but the teams will have around 5-7 meets
before the regional competition. Many athletes use cross
country as a springboard to a lifetime of running and
physical fitness. Good luck to them as they represent
MHS.
As always, I hope everyone has a good week.
