SCHOOL NEWS FOR WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2004

  Notes From the High School

By Terry Howell
McKenzie High School Principal

The Leo Club had the holiday spirit during the Downtown McKenzie Christmas Celebration. They helped their parent organization, the Lions Club, work the Christmas Parade on December 4. They also helped run the ticket booths for the train and carriage rides, sold sweat shirts commemorating this year's event, and assisted Santa Claus in his visit with young people. The Leo Club is an extremely active service organization, dedicated to the betterment of our school and the McKenzie community. The club's sponsor is Dianne Anderson.

In basketball action last week the teams played three games each beginning with a road game at Huntingdon last Monday. The Fillies played a powerful pressing man-to-man defense to force 32 turnovers and force poor shooting by the Lady Rebels to post a 54-32 win. The Lady Rebels could never establish continuity or rhythm in the game as the Fillies outscored them in each quarter to hand the Lady Rebels their first defeat of the season. Anna Trull led the Lady Rebels with 14 points. Renee Crawly chipped in 7 points and 5 rebounds. The Rebels also found the home team difficult to handle and had trouble finding the mark as well in falling to the Mustangs 46-37. The Rebels were 2 of 17 from the 3-point line and 13 of 39 overall, stats that spelled doom for them. The Rebels closed to within 4 points early in the 4th quarter, but never could overtake the Mustangs. No Rebel scored in double figures. Julian Tucker had 8 points. Beau Brown and Hunter Downing added 7 each. The next night the Lady Rebels and Rebels returned home against the Lady Tigers and Tigers of Bruceton. The Lady Rebels found their offensive firepower in scoring 76 points led by Anna Trull and Renee Crawley with 24 and 23 respectively. The defensive pressure, which was not effective against Huntingdon, was potent against the Lady Tigers. Courtney Wiggins and Brooke Cole helped the cause with 14 points and 9 points along with excellent defense. The second game was more contested as the Rebels and Tigers battled for supremacy. The Rebels continued to play several players, many of whom contributed to the win. Beau Brown with 17 points and Drew Hayes with 13 paced the offense. Hayes played an excellent floor game with his defense and passing. Clint Anderson also helped the cause with 9 points. On Friday, the teams ended their big week with home district games against Decatur County High School. The Lady Rebels played an uneven first half leading by as many as 16 points before a late half Panther rally cut the margin to six at halftime, 37-31. The third quarter may have set school scoring records as the Lady Rebels scored 24 straight points and 37 overall to take control of the game. They coasted the rest of the way in defeating their district foe 95-66. Anna Trull sizzled the nets with 42 points with strong support from Renee Crawley (18 points) and Courtney Wiggins (17 points). The girls improved their record to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the district. In the boys' game, the Rebels continued to have problems finding the range from the 3-point line but mastered enough inside offense to defeat the Panthers 57-52. Beau Brown led the team with 17 points. Brice Priestly with 11 and Clint Anderson 9 added the support needed for a victory. The Rebels improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the district. This week the teams play at home on Tuesday against Dresden and end the pre-Christmas half of the season with a road trip to Clarksburg. Come out and support our young people.

Congratulations to Paul Edwards for an outstanding post-season award. Paul was named to the prestigious Associated Press Second Team All-State Team as an offensive lineman. This award comes from all five classifications and is quite an accomplishment for a 2-A player. Named to the AP Honorable Mention All State Team were Drew Hayes in the quarterback position, Cody Cook as a running back, and Randy Lacey as a receiver. Congratulations to these football Rebels for a great season and appropriate recognition.

The Region 6-2A coaches met last Wednesday to choose members to the All-Region 6-2A team. Six members of this year's squad were named to the team. First team selections were Clint Anderson, receiver; Cody Cook, running back; Paul Edwards, offensive lineman; Randy Lacey, receiver; and Shawn Luna, offensive lineman. Selected as the Offensive Most Valuable Player was Drew Hayes. Honorable Mention selections were Ben Boyd, Justin Gilbert, Cornelius Harris, and Greg Pruitt. Congratulations to these young men.

The Key Club continued its book drive for the Northwest Tennessean Division of Head Start here in McKenzie. This month members brought 80 books to be distributed to young children at the McKenzie center. Our students realize the importance of reading or having books read to them and use this project to promote education and literacy at an early age. The club also is involved in its annual Angel Tree project with members responsible for assisting young people during the holiday season. The club is sponsored by Catherine Argo and Jennifer Champion.

As a reminder, this notice is about this week's exam schedule. We will have our First and Fourth Block tests on Thursday, December 16, during the scheduled time for the classes. Our Second and Third Block exams will be on Friday, December 17, from 8:00-9:30 and from 9:40-11:15. This Friday is a half-day for students. School will dismiss for the holidays at 11:15 for bus students and 11:20 for everyone else. Students who are exempt may check out at 11:30 on Thursday, provided they have a note from their parents. They will not have to attend on Friday if they are exempt. A reminder that one is exempt from tests if he/she is passing the class and has not more than one absence from that class.

Jackie Carr and her international business and marketing classes had Mrs. Martha Spain from Manpower as a guest speaker on Wednesday of last week. Mrs. Spain talked to the class about the job interview process including how to dress, act, and prepare for an interview. She also told them about how to fill out job applications and how to submit the names of references for a job. Students learned about resumé preparation and the details of a good resumé. Mrs. Spain discussed job flexibility but warned about job hopping which may look bad on a resumé. She will return this Wednesday to conduct mock interviews of the students in class.

I hope that everyone has an enjoyable, meaningful holiday season.
