Notes From the High School |

Project Graduation has planned two major fundraisers
that showcase seniors in action. On Sunday, December 12,
they will have a womanless beauty pageant to determine
the fairest of the class. This fun-filled event will be
in the Theater at the high school at 2:00 P.M. The cost
to attend is $3.00. The other major fundraiser is the
annual Great Pretenders performance. This event will be
held on Saturday, February 5, at 7:30 P.M. and Sunday,
February 6, at 2:00 P.M. Both performances for the Great
Pretenders will be at the Dickey Fine Arts Building at
Bethel College. Students and parents will chose their
acts in the very near future and will begin rehearsal
during January. I encourage the community to support
this organization which is committed to a safe and
drug-free celebration following graduation.
We will have our Gateway and End-of-Course exams this
week. The Math Gateway and Foundations II End-of-Course
exams will be on Tuesday, December 7. The Language
Gateway, taken in conjunction with the completion of
English II, will be Wednesday, December 8. The Science
Gateway taken after Biology I, and the Physical Science
End-of-Course exams will be on Thursday, December 9. The
U.S. History End-of-Course exam will be on Friday,
December 10. The Gateway exams are the three tests that
are mandatory for students to pass to receive a regular
high school diploma. Both the Gateway and the
End-of-Course exams will count 15% of the student's
second semester average so students have an urgent,
compelling reason to do well. I ask that parents
encourage students to eat breakfast and get plenty of
sleep on the night before these exams which are of great
importance for a student's academic success.
On Monday, December 13, the band will present its annual
Christmas Program at 7:00 P.M. in the Theater. The band
has been busy preparing a full slate of music that is
geared to get everyone into the holiday spirit. The
chorus will also perform for the program. This will
feature students in Mr. Breeden's vocal music class. The
concert and music are free and open to the public.
We will again have Time for Time sessions for students
who have missed more than the six days. Students in
violation of this will need to be at the high school on
Saturday at 7:00 A.M. Time for Time will last until 1:00
P.M. We will meet this Saturday and again on December 18
for the last two sessions to make-up time missed.
The basketball teams opened their season at home on
November 23 against Clarksburg and registered two wins
against the visiting Lady Rockets and Rockets. The Lady
Rebels were an offensive juggernaut in their game as
they won 92-61. Senior Renee Crawley and sophomore Anna
Trull paced the lady Rebels with 29 each, but all the
starters and substitutes contributed to this win. The
Rebels depth was the key as they went deep to the bench
to play several players in their 68-50 win. The team
showed that youth and inexperience could be overcome by
enthusiasm and hustle as the team won going away. They
were paced by Justin Gilbert and Beau Brown who scored
14 points each. After the holiday break, the teams
traveled to Atwood to take on cross-county foe West
Carroll. The girls continued their offensive edge by
scoring 72 points in a 72-54. The defensive pressure of
the Lady Rebel press resulted in several key steals as
the McKenzie girls pulled away to a 42-21 halftime lead.
The Lady Rebels were led by Anna Trull with 23 and Renee
Crawley with 18. Juniors Brooke Cole and Courtney
Wiggins played well also in scoring 15 and 12
respectively. In the boys' game, the Rebels battled the
War Eagles and trailed by 10 points at halftime. A third
quarter late surge by the host team doomed the Rebels as
they fell to the athletic home team 69-48. Clint
Anderson with 12 points and Hunter Downing with 10
points led the scoring. The Rebels were hampered by the
superior athleticism of West Carroll and by their
control of the boards. This week the teams play at
Huntingdon (12/6), at home against Bruceton (12/7), and
at home against Riverside (12/10). The Friday game with
Riverside is the first and only district contest before
Christmas holidays. Come out and support our teams.
Last week Mrs. Champion and Mr. Gallimore sponsored a
Science Fair for students in their Biology II and
Chemistry II classes. Students had the option of
submitting an entry in the Biological Division or the
Physical Division. Students had to test a hypothesis by
active experimentation with a control to either prove or
disprove their original conjecture. They had to write a
detailed paper, create an appropriate display, and
defend their conclusion. In the Biological Division,
First Place went to Brigitte Eubank and Elaine Haw for
their project entitled "Vitamins to Grow On." Earning
Second Place were Whitney Hopper and Brooke Ridley for
their project "Can Household Compounds Be Used to
Promote Good Health in Plants?" In the Physical Division
James Carter and John Kermit Laughrey won First Place
for their project "May the Force Be With You." Julie
Bennett and Megan Hutchison placed second for their
project "Got Smoky Lungs."
On the week of December 13, we will have our final
exams. These tests will count 20% of the overall final
grade. Our First and Fourth Block exams will be
Thursday, December 16, at the regular scheduled times.
Our Second and Third Block exams will be from 8:00 -
9:30 and 9:40 - 11:15 on December 17, which is a
half-day. A more detailed schedule will appear in next
week's page.
As always, I hope everyone has a great week.
