The basketball teams played two home games last week
against Lexington and Big Sandy. On Tuesday, the Lady
Rebels secured sole possession of first place in the
district with a 59-55 victory over the Lady Tigers.
Shooting at a torrid pace, the Lady Rebels managed a
20-point lead midway through the third quarter. Hot soon
turned to cold, and the Lady Rebels had to scratch and
claw to maintain the lead against the persistent
visitors.
The Lady Rebels were led in scoring by freshman Anna
Trull with 18 points and Hope Wyder with 15 points. The
Rebels faced a formidable task in the 7th rank team in
the state. The Tigers shot equally as well as the Lady
Rebels except the Tigers shot well for four quarters.
The visitors shot an astounding 15 of 23 from the
3-point line to ruin any chance the Rebels had of an
upset. The Rebels fell to the superior Tigers by a score
of 94-74. John French with 22 and Randy Lacey with 15
paced the Rebels.
On Friday, the Lady Rebels and Rebels celebrated
Homecoming with victories over the visitors from Big
Sandy. The Lady Rebels had little trouble with the
out-matched Lady Red Devils. They won comfortably by a
score of 65-28 with Anna Trull pitching in 16 and
assistance from Courtney Wiggins and Hope Wyder who
tallied 10 each. The girls' record now stands at 15-7.
The boys contest did not prove to be so easy a matter.
Although the Rebels won handily at Big Sandy and
although the Red Devils had not won a game in two years,
they did not go down without a fight. Midway through the
fourth quarter, the Rebels found themselves trailing the
winless visitors. The last four minutes the Rebels
played good solid team ball to pull out a 59-47 win.
John French (16), Bryan Huffman (13), and Daniel Duncan
(10) led the team offensively. The Rebels' record now
stands at 8-14 for the season.
Congratulations to Hope Wyder. Hope was selected the
Homecoming queen in ceremonies before the game on
Friday. Hope was joined in her court by Mallory Brandon,
Sarah Hartz, Amber King, Kasey Nicholson, and Brittany
Russell. Congratulations to these outstanding seniors.
This week the teams have two home games on Monday
against Dresden and on Thursday against Gleason. The
Gleason game is Senior Night - we will recognize the
senior Lady Rebels, Rebels, and cheerleaders at this
time. The senior Lady Rebels are Mallory Brandon, Sarah
Hartz, Brittany Russell, and Hope Wyder. The senior
Rebels are John French, David Duncan, John Craig Howell,
and Bryan Huffman with manager Kris Sydnor and video
technician Justin Taylor. The cheerleaders are Captain
Savanna Cooper and Co-Captains Amanda Rogers and Carrie
Stambaugh. Come out to show appreciation to these
students of our school.
The senior class and their parents are busy practicing
for the Great Pretenders on February 14 at 7:00 P.M. and
Sunday afternoon at 2:00 P.M. Both performances will be
in the Dickey Fine Arts Center at Bethel College.
Tickets are on sale for $5.00 for general admission and
$7.00 for reserved seating. The proceeds will go toward
the alcohol and drug-free celebration following
graduation. I encourage everyone to attend this
fun-filled performance and enjoy the talent of the
senior class and their parents.
Ms. Glynda Corbin has begun rehearsals for the school
play The Man Who Came to Dinner by Moss Hart and George
Kaufman. The play features 35 students who auditioned
and read for individual roles in the play. In addition
25 other students will be involved in the production of
the play in constructing sets, coordinating wardrobes,
marketing the play, dealing with the business aspects of
the play, and other off-stage aspects of play
production. This is Ms. Corbin's 14th year serving as
the play director at our school, and the community can
expect a quality effort and performance from the cast
along with a visual appeal through set design and
costumes. The dates for the play are Saturday evening,
April 17, and Sunday matinee on April 18. More details
will follow as the date gets closer.
A reminder to parents that McKenzie High School is
offering a number of services for our students before
and after school. Ms. Jo Ann Elam is conducting classes
for the T-CAP Competency Test in language arts and math
and also ACT-Prep review. Both groups meet on Monday and
Wednesday after school until 4:15 p.m. and on Tuesday
and Thursday from 7:00-7:50 a.m. Seniors must show
mastery on the competency test to be in line to receive
a regular high school diploma. The ACT-Prep class is
beneficial to students who plan to take the April
assessment. With the money from the Tennessee lottery
tied to ACT results, students should make an effort to
attend all sessions until the administration of the
test. In addition, our teachers are available to assist
students before school, after school, or during
homeroom. Students should avail themselves of these
opportunities.
Last Thursday, we issued Progress Reports during
Parent-Teacher Conference. All students in academic
classes should have received Progress Reports detailing
how well they have done so far this semester. Because of
the weather and because attendance is usually lighter
the second semester, the number of parents attending was
less than the fall's. I encourage parents to look at
Progress Reports if they were unable to attend and ask
for a conference if the grade, attendance, or behavior
indicates a problem. Especially for seniors, the second
semester is critical for students to do well to place
themselves in line to graduate. Forty-eight (48) percent
of our freshmen parents, forty-seven (47) percent of our
sophomore parents, fifty-five (55) percent of our junior
parents, and fifty (50) percent of our senior parents
attended the conference last Thursday. We appreciate all
of the parents who come to support us in the education
of their child. We ask that those unable to attend to
make contact with us if necessary to insure adequate
academic progress is being made.
School will not be in session on Monday, February 16. We
will observe the national holiday of President's Day. |
