The basketball teams found difficult opposition Monday
night against the visiting Lady Lions and Lions of
Dresden. The girls could never capture and sustain the
lead against the relentless Lady Lions. With critical
free throws and clutch shooting, the Lady Lions edged
the Lady Rebels by a score of 47-44. The boys' contest
was a frustrating affair as the Rebels missed key
baskets and had numerous turnovers against the visitors.
Every time the Rebels whittled the lead, the Lions would
go on their own scoring spree. A fourth quarter run by
Dresden spelled doom for the Rebels who lost 59-44.
Leading scorers for the Rebels were John Craig Howell
with 13 and John French with 12.
On Thursday, the Lady Rebels and Rebels completed
their regular season with Senior Night at the high
school gym. The Lady Rebels faced the 2nd ranked A
school in the state in the Gleason Lady Bulldogs. The
Lady Rebels ended the regular season on a positive note
even in the loss to the Lady Bulldogs. They played well
defensively and gave an excellent effort in the loss to
the 2nd ranked team in the state losing by a score of
49-38. The Lady Rebels were led by Hope Wyder with 11
points. The Rebels had a ton of turnovers the first
half, but led the youthful Bulldogs 18-8 at halftime. A
strong, 25-point third quarter guaranteed the victory as
the Rebels rolled to a 60-29 margin. Randy Lacy and
Daniel Duncan paced the team with 21 and 12 points
respectively.
This week the district tournament began Monday with the
Rebels playing Parsons-Riverside at 8:00 P.M. The
results were unavailable at the time this article went
to press. The girls will play on Tuesday night against
the winner of Camden and Riverside. Depending on results
the boys could play Thursday and Saturday if they win on
Monday. The girls will play on Friday, in either the
consolation or championship depending on Tuesday's
results. For specific information as it happens, please
call the school.
One of the newer clubs in our school is the Wildlife
Club sponsored by Paula Doster. The club has worked
closely with the T.W.R.A. (Tennessee Wildlife Resource
Agency) in doing projects, learning about the
environment, and assisting in maintenance of certain
wildlife areas. On Saturday, January 31, nine members of
the club traveled to Paris Landing to work on a
conservation project. Those nine students joined members
of the Henry County High School Club and planted
approximately 400 specimens. The intended purpose of the
work was to stop erosion in an area close to Paris
Landing Inn. In the spring, students will return to the
same area to get an accurate count of each type of
specimen that survived and to measure for baseline data
to be used by T.W.R.A. The two groups will continue to
gather data for survival rate and growth rate. The
Wildlife Club is another way that students can learn by
doing real-life work.
In honor of Black History Month, we have done and plan
to do several activities and programs to honor the
contributions of African Americans to American culture.
Ms. Yates' sociology class has just finished projects
highlighting the contributions of African Americans. The
class will display the biographies of prominent African
Americans on the bulletin board outside the front
office. The biographies will include such luminaries as
Wilma Randolph, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Maya
Angelou, and B. B. King. Also displayed will be famous
African Americans and their key roles in American
history on the bulletin board outside the cafeteria. The
front office is sponsoring a Weekly Challenge to test
students' knowledge of African Americans. The winner of
the contest will receive a Coke at break. Finally, the
Minority Council plans to have a Black History Month
Program on February 27. It will feature readings, songs,
skits, and a guest speaker. The public is invited to
attend this student-led program. |
