  Notes From the High School

By MHS Principal Terry Howell

Several of our Art I and Art II students will travel to Nashville on Sunday, February 29, to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. They will tour the exhibit "From El Greco to Picasso" which is currently on display at the museum. There is no cost for the tour. The expenses involved will be in transportation and for meals. Depending on the interest, the group will take either school vans or a bus. This trip is a valuable, cultural experience which students should show an interest. Art teacher Glynda Corbin will serve as the sponsor/chaperone with help from parents.

The boys' basketball team won its first round game in the District 11-AA tournament at Lexington Monday night by defeating Riverside 79-57. The Rebels had seniors John French and Bryan Huffman with 22 points each to put them in the semi-finals of the district and qualify them for the regional tournament. On Thursday, the Rebels played against the top seed in the district and the 4th ranked team in the state, the Lexington Tigers. Falling behind early, the Rebels succumbed to the smothering full-court press of the home team and never made a game of it. The Tigers prevailed easily 79-44 to put the Rebels in the consolation game against Camden, which lost to Milan. Daniel Duncan with 20 points led the Rebels against Lexington. The consolation game saw the Rebels play evenly with the Lions of Camden. Unfortunately, the Rebels ran out of time in their come-back bid and lost 61-58. Bryan Huffman led the Rebels with 15 points. He had double-figure support from John French (13) and John Craig Howell (10). Bryan Huffman and John French made the all-district regular season team while Daniel Duncan made the all-tournament team. The Rebels play in the first round of the region tournament at Chester County on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

The top-seeded Lady Rebels found a difficult foe on Tuesday night as they squared off against the Camden Lady Lions. The Lady Lions led for most of the game and seemed to hold back each rally by the Lady Rebels. However, as the fourth quarter wound down the Lady Rebels found the range, turned up the pressure, and squeaked by for the win by a score of 37-35. The victory catapulted them into the championship game against Milan on Friday. Because the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Rebels had split during the regular season, the game promised to be an exciting one. In the championship game, the Lady Rebels had trouble clicking all night offensively and played against an inspired Milan team which prevailed 52-37. Hope Wyder with 13 led the Lady Rebels. Making the all-district team for the regular season were Renee Crawley, Anna Trull, and Hope Wyder. Named to the all-tournament team were Anna Trull and Hope Wyder. Coach Dan Ridley earned the Coach-of-the-Year Award for the second consecutive year. The Lady Rebels will play Bolivar on Friday at 5:30 P.M. at Chester County.

On Friday, February 20, Ms. Jo Ann Young, our journalism teacher, sponsored a trip to Murray State University for her class to attend a journalism workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to teach students the skills and techniques of proper journalism and for students to learn about the production of a school newspaper. Future plans are to take the lessons learned and produce and publish our own school newspaper in the near future. Students in the class have already polled other students as to topics and features to include in the paper. We await the first publication of the yet-to-be-named newspaper.

Spring football training began last Thursday with 43 rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors participating in the 10-day spring drill. Coach Wade Comer and his staff have several holes to plug with the graduation of 10 seniors, many of whom played on both sides of the ball. Spring drills afford the coaching staff the opportunity to work with all students to gauge their skill level and drive to play as well as to teach fundamental skills to inexperienced players. Plans are to have two scrimmages this spring against Humboldt on March 2 at 4:00 P.M. and Crockett County on March 5 at 3:00 P.M. Both games will be at the high school practice field.

In wellness class this week School Resource Officer Jackie Sykes spoke with students about alcohol and drug issues. Officer Sykes provided students with a booklet which tested their knowledge in a pre-test format. He then gave them correct answers which in most cases countered their misconceptions and perceptions. With the increase in drug and alcohol abuse among all segments of society, this trendy program helps to supplement what Coach Comer teaches in his regular curriculum. It also reveals the true purpose of a school resource officer, i.e. to educate young people and to establish a positive rapport between the law enforcement agencies and young people.

This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week. All teachers will review the proper procedures to follow in a tornado drill since we are approaching the tornado season for our area. The county will also test its severe weather/emergency transmission system to alert schools of impending bad weather. The high school will participate in a county-wide drill on Wednesday, February 25, when we are alerted by our NOAA weather radio. Results of the drill will be reported to the Carroll County Emergency Management Agency which in turn will give the results to TEMA and the State Emergency Operations Center. Let me ask everyone that during inclement weather not to check out students. We think we have a safe facility and that checking students out may put them in harm's way, instead of safeguarding them. We will not release students without proper parent authorization and a direct contact with a school official. Your goal as well as ours is to maintain safety in a threatening situation.
