The senior class and their parents are busy practicing
for the Great Pretenders on Saturday, February 14, at
7:00 P.M. and Sunday at 2:00 P.M. Both performances will
be in the Dickey Fine Arts Center at Bethel College.
Tickets are on sale for $5.00 for general admission and
$7.00 for reserved seating. The proceeds will go toward
the alcohol and drug-free celebration following
graduation. I encourage everyone to attend this
fun-filled performance and enjoy the talent of the
senior class and their parents.
Since Valentine's Day is drawing near, I want to remind
parents of several areas of concern. Because of safety
issues, balloons or glass may not be transported on a
bus. Parents or others who plan to send Valentine's
gifts to students at school need to be aware of this.
Also, the school will not deliver or announce all the
Valentine floral deliveries and gifts. Floral deliveries
and gifts will be placed in the cafeteria after 2:30
P.M. for the vendors to give the students. Vendors will
provide a list for us to post outside the cafeteria
stating students who will receive these gifts. We will
handle the deliveries with an eye toward minimizing
interference with classroom instruction. We appreciate
the assistance of everyone in making this a smooth
event.
The DECA organization attended the regional competition
at U.T. Martin with great results. Brittany Taylor
placed 2nd in the Retail Merchandising category. Heather
Flippin and Sydney Patterson earned 2nd in the
Hospitality Services Team event. Bryan Huffman entered
the Technical Sales Presentation and won 3rd place. In
the DECA Quiz Bowl, Andrew Cross had a 3rd place finish.
In the Financial Services Team event, juniors Kimberly
Gaskins and Brittany Lessenberry had a 3rd place finish
on the test portion. Selected as alternates to the state
convention were Mary Holland, Quiz Bowl; Heidi Thomas,
Retail Merchandizing; and Amanda Allen, Food Marketing.
Seven of these students will represent our school at the
State DECA Convention in March.
In basketball action last Tuesday, the Lady Rebels
suffered their first loss in the district to Milan in
overtime by a score of 36-34. The Lady Rebels played
well defensively, yet could not click on offense. With
the absence of junior Renee Crawley, the Lady Rebels
lost one of the premier players in the district and a
strong post presence. The Lady Rebels were led by Hope
Wyder with 22 points. In the boys' contest, the Rebels
played well in the late third and fourth quarters. They
cut a 20-point third quarter lead to four points. They
eventually fell 65-57 to the Bulldogs. The Rebels were
led by John French with 19, Daniel Duncan with 13, and
Bryan Huffman with 10. On Thursday, the Lady Rebels and
Rebels each won their contests against Central's Tigers.
The Lady Rebels played an aggressive contest and opened
up a 28-point half-time lead. Playing most of the second
half with reserves, the Lady Rebels won going away by a
score of 66-40. Four players scored in double digits to
pace the scoring: Anna Trull (15), Hope Wyder (12),
Courtney Wiggins (11), and Sarah Hartz (10). The Rebels
played their best game of the season against the Tigers
in gaining an 88-47 victory. The Rebels played team ball
that helped to distribute the scoring. John Craig Howell
(16), John French (14), and Daniel Duncan (13) led the
Rebels in scoring. Eleven players scored for the Rebels
in their win. On Friday the Lady Rebels and Rebels ended
a busy week with a road game at Camden. The girls, again
playing short-handed without Renee Crawley, played hard
and well to scratch out a 58-53 win against the Lady
Lions. Freshman Anna Trull led the Lady Rebels with 23
points and had strong support from senior Hope Wyder who
pitched in 19 points. The Lady Rebels extended their
district record to 6-1 and their overall record to 13-6.
The Rebels found the going tough against the physical
Lions. Quickly falling behind, the Rebels were unable to
maintain offensive momentum. The Rebels lost by a score
of 67-50. John French with 13 and Daniel Duncan with 12
paced the Rebels who fell to 1-6 in the district and
6-13 overall. This week the Lady Rebels and Rebels have
two home games against Lexington on Tuesday and Big
Sandy on Friday.
Friday is basketball homecoming at McKenzie High School.
Members of the Homecoming Royalty are as follows:
Mallory Brandon, Sarah Hartz, Amber King, Casey
Nicholson, Brittany Russell, and Hope Wyder. The
crowning of the queen will be at 6:15 on Friday night.
Come out and enjoy the festivities.
Last week we held Student Council elections for the
2004-05 school year. Elected to lead our student body
next year were these students: Heidi Thomas, president;
Randy Lacy, vice-president; Rachel Chandler, reporter;
Samantha Doster, treasurer; Kelly Fowler, secretary; and
Renee Crawley, parliamentarian. Congratulations to these
student leaders. I know they will lead the student body
well. |
