Notes From the High School |

By MHS Principal Terry Howell |

School resumed for the second half of the year this past
Monday. On our 4x4 block schedule, that means four new
classes for our students. It is a clean slate and a time
to continue to do well in these new courses or to
resolve to do better if the first half was less than
spectacular. Students met in homerooms on Monday morning
to get their new schedules and begin meeting in those
classes on day one. The second semester is critical for
many of our seniors who must earn 28 credits and satisfy
their pathway requirements for credits. Seniors must
also earn three credits the second semester to
participate in graduation exercises in May. This year's
senior class is the last one that must pass the T-CAP
Competency Tests in math and language arts to earn a
regular diploma. Future classes must pass the Gateway
tests in English, biology, and algebra to earn a high
school diploma.
We will issue report cards on Wednesday, January 7, for
the final grades of the first term. Many students will
have their schedules changed if they failed certain
classes that are pre-requisites for classes that they
had signed up for this semester. Also, students not
completing Time-for-Time because of excessive
absenteeism will not receive credit for those classes
not made up by attending our after-school program.
Several of our football players have received
post-season awards for their outstanding seasons. The
Jackson Sun named its All West Tennessee football team.
Senior linebacker John Craig Howell made the team for
the second consecutive year with 137 tackles and 312
career tackles. Named as an All West Tennessee Sophomore
- one of only three - was Drew Hayes who passed for over
2800 yards breaking nearly all previous MHS passing
records for a season and career. Mentioned as
outstanding juniors to watch were Cody Cook (1170 yards
rushing) and Randy Lacey (1006 yards receiving).
Honorable mention candidates include Brad Campbell,
Clint Anderson, Kris Sydnor, Andrew Cross, Paul Edwards,
and Shawn Luna. Sophomore Drew Hayes also made the
prestigious Tennessee Sports Writers Association
All-State team to cap off a highly successful year.
Congratulations to Drew for earning this award.
The girls and boys basketball team competed in the
Huntingdon Point Guard Christmas Classic during the
holidays. The girls split the two games that they played
losing to Obion County Central High School, but
defeating Friendship Christian School, a state
tournament qualifier last year. The boys played well in
a losing effort against Adamsville in their premier game
in the tournament. They fell to the Crockett County
Cavaliers in their second game as their offense
sputtered. Both teams began the second half of the
season on the road against Big Sandy on Friday. The
girls pulled away in the second half for an easy 60-38
victory. The team had balanced scoring to defeat the
Lady Red Devils with Anna Trull (13), Hope Wyder (10),
Renee Crawley (9), Brittany Russell (8), and Courtney
Wiggins (8) pacing the offense. The boys also earned a
victory over the host Red Devils by a 65-46 margin.
Players in double figures were John French (18), John
Craig Howell (12), and Drew Hayes (10). On Saturday, the
Lady Rebels and Rebels found stiff competition against
the visiting Fillies and Mustangs of Huntingdon. The
girls fell 46-31 while the boys recorded a 76-37
drilling by the Mustangs. The girls' record stands at
7-3 and the boys at 5-5. This week the teams play at
home against Milan on Tuesday and Camden on Friday.
The high school football banquet will be Friday, January
16, at 6:30 P.M. at the high school cafeteria with the
awards and recognitions in the Theatre following the
banquet. Parents and guests may purchase tickets for
$10.00 per ticket prior to January 13. The event will be
catered with steak and all the trimmings, salad,
dessert, and drink. Special guests including players,
coaches and wives, school officials, and selected others
will be the honored guests of McKenzie Rebel Touchdown
Club which will be in charge of the banquet. Also, of
interest is the All Region 6-AA Banquet which will be
held on Wednesday, January 21, at 6:30 P.M. at
Huntingdon Middle School. Those players who made the
first team will be guests of our school. Parents will
need to pay $9.00 for tickets to attend this banquet.
The ten finalists of the Voice of the Democracy
Script-Writing Contest will be the special guests of the
V.F.W. Post 4939 on Monday, January 12, at 6:30 P.M. The
ten finalists and their parents will enjoy a banquet and
program organized by the local post. Our school has
participated in this program for over 30 years and looks
forward to being a part of this civic, patriotic
program. Two of our students, Hunter Downing and Brooke
Ridley, will present their scripts to the veterans and
invited guests following the meal. Post 4939 has long
supported McKenzie High School, and we do appreciate the
opportunity to participate in this meaningful event, one
that has even greater significance because of 9/11 and
our military missions for the past two years.
The McKenzie Band Boosters will sponsor a breakfast at
the V.F.W. on Saturday, January 17. Tentative plans are
to serve a country ham breakfast with biscuits, eggs,
and gravy and juice for $5.00. The time for the
breakfast will be from 6:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. at the
V.F.W. The public may purchase tickets from any band
student or call the high school office for more
information. Proceeds for the breakfast will go to
finance the band trip to Florida during the second
spring break of the year. |
