McKenzie High School will be hosting its annual
Financial Aid Workshop for graduating seniors and their
parents on Thursday, January 22. The meeting will begin
at 7 P.M. in the high school library. Mrs. Laura
Bateman, Director of Financial Aid at Bethel College,
will be conducting the workshop. She will cover
scholarships, grants, loans, and workstudy.
Information about the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) will also be discussed. The FAFSA is
the form used as the application for the Tennessee
Lottery Scholarship Program. The information presented
will be applicable for students planning to attend any
college or technical school. All seniors and their
parents are encouraged to attend. If you have any
questions concerning the meeting, please contact Ms.
Ladona Herrin at McKenzie High School at 352-2133.
Reports cards were issued last week. Students should
have brought these home for parents' inspection to see
the results of the first term grades. Of the final
grades awarded for the first team, 32% were A's; 27%
were B's; 23%, C's; 10%, D's; and 8%, F's. Thirty-five
students made the High Honor Roll, a distinction for
those students who have all A's as their final average.
This number is about 9% of our student body. Forty-three
students made the Honor Roll which is for those students
with an overall A average and no grade below an 89. This
number represents 12% of our student body. One hundred
and eighteen students earned inclusion in the Merit Roll
for those students with an overall B average and no
grade below 85. This is 33% of our students. Fifty-five
(55) percent of our students made one of the three
academic rolls. Congratulations to them in their
academic efforts.
The football banquet will be this Friday, January 16, at
6:30 P.M. in the cafeteria. The McKenzie Rebel Touchdown
Club will sponsor the meal for cheerleaders, players,
coaches, school personnel, and other special guests.
Parents and others should purchase their tickets for
$10.00 from the front office. The school will honor the
cheerleaders and football team at this time. The awards
portion of the program will be in the Theater.
Project Graduation will continue its Great Pretenders
practice on Monday, January 19, at 7:00 P.M. in the
Theater at the high school. Seniors and parents should
be there promptly to rehearse for this fundraiser for
the drug free celebration following graduation. The
Great Pretenders performance is scheduled for Saturday,
February 14, at 7:00 P.M. and Sunday, February 15, at
2:00 P.M. Tickets are on sale for $5.00 for general
admission and $7.00 for reserved seating. Tickets may be
purchased from any participating senior. Support these
seniors in their fundraiser and come out and enjoy some
quality entertainment.
A reminder that the Band Boosters will have a Country
Ham Breakfast at the V.F.W. on Saturday, January 17. For
$5.00, supporters of the band will get country ham,
sausage, eggs, gravy, and juice. Proceeds will go toward
the trip to Walt Disney World in April, a special trip
that the band does once every four years.
This semester we added a new class to our curriculum -
career management success. This vocational course is
designed for underclassmen to help them do personal
inventories, determine their aptitudes, visit several of
the surrounding post-secondary schools and plants, and
listen to guest speakers who are involved in a variety
of fields and enterprises out in the community. Ms.
Jackie Carr is teaching the class which helps to satisfy
any area in the technical pathway. The course itself is
a hands-on course that develops critical thinking skills
and evaluative skills. We have approximately 40 students
in two classes for this new vocational offering.
On October 21, 2003, we had our 5-year vocational
assessment at McKenzie High School. The visiting team
doing the assessment looked at all areas of the
vocational program - funding, budgeting, instruction and
curricular alignment, teachers' credentials, affiliated
student organizations, and other similar areas. Next
week we will submit to the state our plans for
improvement in light of the recommendations made. The
vocational department appreciates the input of the
Vocational Advisory Committee which meets semi-annually.
The basketball teams had two games each last week
against Milan and Camden. On Tuesday the girls defeated
Milan by a score of 45-30 to remain undefeated in the
district. They were led offensively by Hope Wyder who
had 19 points and 12 rebounds. Renee Crawley chipped in
11 points and Brittany Russell played a solid floor game
offensively along with strong defense and several
steals. The boys' team had the visiting Bulldogs on the
ropes, but were plagued with poor free throw shooting
during the stretch and a torrid 3-point barrage by the
visitors. They lost in overtime 65-62 to go to 1-1 in
the district.
The Rebels were led by John French with 19, John
Craig Howell and Bryan Huffman both scored 13. On
Friday, the two teams continued in district action
against the Camden Lady Lions and Lions. Against the
Lady Lions, the Lady Rebels defeated the guests by a
score of 65-41. They played their best half of
basketball this season in racing out to a 41-12 halftime
lead. Playing all players, the Lady Rebels cruised to
the final margin and were led by Renee Crawley and Hope
Wyder with 18 each.
The Rebels faced the physical style of the Lions in a
tightly contested game. The Rebels could not get the
ball to drop in the second quarter in trailing by double
digits at halftime. The Rebels made several runs, but
could not overcome the Lions' lead, losing 57-51. They
were paced by John French (13), Bryan Huffman (12), and
John Craig Howell (11). This week the Lady Rebels and
Rebels play at Lexington on Tuesday, at Huntingdon on
Thursday, and at home against West Carroll on Saturday.
School will not be in session on Monday, January 19. We
will have Martin Luther King Day on this national
holiday date. |
