This last week the Lady Rebels traveled to Lexington and
Huntingdon to face stiff competition. The Lady Rebels
found strong resistance against the youthful Lady Tigers
of Lexington. After a first half that saw the lead
change hands several times, the Lady Rebels managed to
gain control down the stretch to take a 61-52 victory.
The Lady Rebels had strong offensive performances from
Renee Crawley and Hope Wyder both of whom tallied 19
points. Mallory Brandon hit several clutch free throws
down the stretch to preserve the win.
In the boys contest, the Rebels battled Lexington,
the pre-season pick to win the district. With great
outside shooting and inside power, the Tigers easily
outdistanced the Rebels 71-50. Leading scorers for the
Rebels were Daniel Duncan with 13 and John French with
10. On Thursday, the teams played cross-county rival
Huntingdon in non-district action. Both teams battled
hard, but fell to the Fillies and Mustangs. The girls
lost 45-38 with Renee Crawley scoring 18 points. The
boys lost 65-62 with John French scoring 17 and Bryan
Huffman 13. On Saturday, the teams played at home
against cross county rival West Carroll. The girls
quickly jumped out to a big lead and easily defeated the
Lady War Eagles by a score of 70-46. Anna Trull and Hope
Wyder pitched in 17 points each while Renee Crawley
added 13 points and several rebounds to pace the team to
their win. The girls improved their record to 11-4 with
the victory. The boys started fast also, but had the
formidable task of containing the superior height of the
visitors. Unfortunately, they lost by a score of 69-54.
John French and Bryan Huffman each contributed 13 points
and Daniel Duncan had 12. It was not enough to overcome
the 20 rebound advantage of the visiting team. This week
the teams play Gleason on Tuesday and at home against
Riverside on Friday.
McKenzie High School will be hosting its annual
Financial Aid Workshop for graduating seniors and their
parents on Thursday, January 22. The meeting will begin
at 7 P.M. in the high school library. Mrs. Laura
Bateman, Director of Financial Aid at Bethel College,
will be conducting the workshop. She will cover
scholarships, grants, loans, and workstudy. Information
about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
will also be discussed. The FAFSA is the form used as
the application for the Tennessee Lottery Scholarship
Program. The information presented will be applicable
for students planning to attend any college or technical
school. All seniors and their parents are encouraged to
attend. If you have any questions concerning the
meeting, please contact Ms. Ladona Herrin at McKenzie
High School at 352-2133.
Last week the Senior Newsletter went to all of our
seniors at school. Parents should ask to look at this
issue which is filled with a great deal of information.
Some of the items covered included state-sponsored
scholarships such as the Ned McWherter Scholars Program,
the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship Program, the Minority
Teaching Fellows Program, and the TN Dependent
Children's Scholarship. Also, many other local and
private scholarship programs are listed in this issue
along with upcoming visits by college recruiters as well
as three ACT-Prep opportunities for those students
taking the April ACT assessment. Ask your senior for a
copy or call the school to ask Ms. Herrin for a copy.
Ms. Elam has begun the ACT Prep class here at the high
school for those who are taking the February or April
assessment. The class has software videos and a workbook
($10.00). It addresses knowledge-based questions as well
as test-taking skills. The class meets on Mondays and
Wednesdays from 3:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M., Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 7:00 A.M. to 8:00 A.M., and Saturdays
9:00 A.M. to 11 A.M. During these same times, Ms. Elam
will also work with those seniors needing to pass the
TCAP-Competency Test. The end-of-February assessment is
the last testing before May graduation. Students must
pass the language arts and math portions to be eligible
for a regular high school diploma.
On Friday night, we held our annual football banquet to
celebrate the seasons of our cheerleaders and football
team. After a delicious steak dinner prepared by
Mallard's and provided for the players and school
personnel by the Touchdown Club, the attendees adjourned
to the Theater for the awards and recognitions. Ms.
Christie Plunk, the cheerleader sponsor, recognized the
cheerleaders and lauded them for their successful
season. Especially noteworthy was the fact that the
cheerleaders won the TSSAA Division I Cheer Division
Championship for the second straight season. Ms. Plunk
gave each cheerleader mementos for their championship
season as well as certificates from the TSSAA for having
captured the championship. Coach Comer and the assistant
coaches also recognized their team and praised them for
their hard work and dedication. This year's senior class
ended their careers with a record of 42 wins and 11
losses. Players receiving special awards were as
follows: Cody Cook and Drew Hayes, Offensive Back Award;
Kris Sydnor, Offensive Lineman Award; Andrew Cross,
Defensive Lineman Award; Randy Lacey, Defensive Back
Award; and Greg Pruitt, Most Improved Player Award. Brad
Campbell received the Howard Nolen Team First Award.
Andrew Cross was noted as the David Long Academic Award
winner with Jake Smith and John Craig Howell also
recognized for having grade point averages above 3.5.
Recipients of the Jeff Givens Sportsmanship Award were
Clint Manns and Jake Smith. The Kermit Holland 3-D Award
went to Daniel Hollowell for his determination,
dedication, and discipline. The J.P. Carter Most
Inspired Player Award for exhibiting courage in the face
of obstacles went to Daniel Duncan who battled back
problems all year. This year's Mr. Rebel Award as the
team's most valuable player went to John Craig Howell.
Chosen as captains of the team for the 2003 season by
their teammates were Brad Campbell, Andrew Cross, and
John Craig Howell. The Touchdown Club gave each player a
shirt commemorating their season. Senior cheerleaders
and players also received keepsakes of their season.
Mrs. Sandra Johnson made a scrapbook for each senior
player chronicling the year from pre-season to
post-season, a 130 page keepsake. She also made photo
keepsakes for the senior cheerleaders and Ms. Plunk.
Over 220 people attended this wonderful event to
celebrate the commitment to excellence of these young
people. Many thanks to all involved in making this a
memorable event. |
