On Wednesday of last week, seven members of our
Business Professionals of American Club attended the
annual B.P.A. Regional Competition at U.T. Martin. B.P.A.
is an organization for students who have taken or are
taking vocational business-related classes. Club sponsor
Jeannine Lowe chaperoned these students to the
competition and placed them in the area of competition.
Senior John French won 3rd place in Financial Accounting
and 4th place in Financial Math and Analysis. Junior
Heidi Thomas placed 4th in the Entrepreneur Speech
category. Senior Heather Flippin had a 5th place finish
in Interview Skills. Congratulations to these students
for competing successfully in the B.P.A. Competition.
The senior class and their parents are practicing for
the Great Pretenders on February 14 at 7:00 P.M. and
Sunday afternoon at 2:00 P.M. Both performances will be
in the Dickey Fine Arts Center at Bethel College.
Tickets are on sale for $5.00 for general admission and
$7.00 for reserved seating. The proceeds will go toward
the alcohol and drug-free celebration following
graduation. I encourage everyone to attend this
fun-filled performance and enjoy the talent of the
senior class and their parents.
An upcoming event of importance is the spring semester
Parent-Teacher Conference on Thursday, February 5, from
3:30 - 6:30 P.M. Parents should attend this conference
in which they can meet with teachers to discuss
academic, social, or behavior issues. All students will
receive progress reports on the first 41/2 weeks of
school this semester. Parents unable to attend may get
progress reports from students who will receive them on
Friday. On a block schedule, it is of critical
importance for students to have a sustained effort to do
their work and prepare for tests. Because a block is
essentially 90 minutes, teachers cover a great deal of
material which demands that students stay abreast as to
what they should accomplish. I ask all parents and
guardians to attend this conference to establish lines
of communication with the teachers.
In basketball action last week, the teams ventured
outside the district in a road contest against Gleason
on Tuesday night. The girls' game was a nip-and-tuck
affair with the lead changing hands several times.
Eventually, the Lady Bulldogs, the top-ranked A team in
the state, prevailed by a score of 55-49. Renee Crawley
played an outstanding game offensively and defensively
scoring 20 points. Hope Wyder showed her consistent
offensive abilities in adding 18. In the boys' game, the
Rebels picked up the win 67-42 against the outmanned
Bulldogs. Four Rebels scored in double figures with
Bryan Huffman's 14 points, 13 points for John French and
Daniel Duncan, and 10 points for Randy Lacey. The teams
played at home against Riverside on Friday in district
action.
The University of Tennessee Honor Band will be February
5 - 7. Schools from across Tennessee and Kentucky
nominate students from their individual schools.
Students are selected based on their past musical
accomplishments and the director's recommendation.
Selected students arrive on the UTM campus on February 5
to audition for their placement. They must have two
prepared musical selections and must know and be able to
play all of their major scales. After chair placement is
concluded, the students then rehearse intensely with
well known conductors from across the Southeast to
prepare for a public concert on Saturday, February 7 on
the UTM campus. Musicians from MHS selected to
participate are as follows: Amanda Allen, Rebekeh
Cooper, David Deaton, Christy Lowe, Jillian Maynard,
Dana Melton, Joey Sam, Brittany Washburn, and Renee
Wilson. |
