Senior Brittany Washburn has received an
invitation to sing the National Anthem at the
TSSAA Girls State Basketball Tournament at
Murfreesboro. Brittany will sing at 5:30 P.M.
prior to Session 2 on Wednesday, March 10.
Brittany has sung the National Anthem at our
home games on several occasions this year and
will travel to MTSU for this honor of doing the
same at a larger venue. We are proud of Brittany
and her contribution to our band program and the
many performances she has made at our
school-sponsored talent show each year. Good
luck to her as she represents our school.
Our mid-term exams will be this week on Tuesday
and Wednesday. On Tuesday, students will take
their First and Fourth Block tests. On
Wednesday, they will take their Second and Third
Block tests. These tests will count 25% of the
first 9-weeks grade. Report cards will be issued
on Wednesday, March 17.
The Tennessee Association of Student Councils
held its annual convention last week on March
4-6 at McMinn County High School. Over 800
students and adults from across the state
attended the convention which was designed to
provide leadership opportunities and support for
Tennessee's student leaders. The convention also
served as a means for students to interact and
network with each other to get ideas about
student activities and programs. Sponsor Paula
Doster chaperoned these students who will
represent the student body next year: Heidi
Thomas, president; Rachel Chandler, reporter;
Samantha Doster, treasurer; and Renee Crawley,
parliamentarian.
Several McKenzie High School students recently
participated in the 2004 Federal Junior Duck
Stamp Art Competition. Students competed locally
for the opportunity to have their paintings
entered into the state competition. For the
winner at the state level, the artist will have
his/her painting work as the model for the duck
stamp for this year. Chosen to represent our
school were James Carter, Zachary Drye, and Kent
Ozment. Good luck to them as they advance to the
next level. The MHS art teacher is Glynda
Corbin.
Last week students had the opportunity to apply
for the 2004 Honors Banquet which will be March
30 at 6:30 P.M. Sponsored by the McKenzie Rotary
Club, this event has served as a means to
acknowledge and celebrate the academic success
of students who earned a 92 or above average for
the spring semester of last year and the fall
semester of this year. For those who applied and
met the criteria, the Honors Banquet Committee
extended an invitation to respond to by March
11. This year's speaker will be 1974 alumnus
Jeff Webb who has distinguished himself as a
newspaper writer and editor.
This week our DECA Chapter will go to Nashville
to participate and compete in the statewide
convention. Students from across the state will
attend the convention on March 11-13 at the
Music City Sheraton in Nashville. Andrew Cross
will compete in the Quiz Bowl, Bryan Huffman in
Technical Marketing, Brittany Taylor in Retail
Marketing, and Heidi Thomas in Retail Marketing.
Heather Flippin and Sydney Patterson will
compete in a team event - Hospitality Services.
Kimberly Gaskins and Elise Hayes will serve as
voting delegates to choose the state officers
for 2004-05. Mr. Scott Jewell and his wife will
chaperone these young people to this year's
convention. Mr. Jewell will help the state by
being the chief of the Quick Service Restaurant
Category. Good luck to them as they represent
our school. The state office did send back the
overall score at our regional competition:
Nineteen (19) out of thirty-five (35) received
certificates indicating competency in the area
of competition. This is a much higher percentage
than is received by most schools in competition.
Congratulations to Mr. Jewell and the local
chapter.
Students involved in spring sports are busy
preparing for the upcoming season. Our school
now fields teams in these sports: baseball,
soccer, softball, tennis (girls and boys), and
track and field (girls and boys). They have
these coaches heading the sport respectively:
Josh Kee, George Ognibene, Randy Thomas, Dan
Ridley, and David Duncan. Over 100
student-athletes compete in these sports. The
first date that these teams may play officially
is on March 15 and all of them will begin
shortly after this time. Look in the Banner for
the schedules of these teams and support them as
they represent our school.
Last Saturday night, the band sponsored the Miss
McKenzie Pageant. With 32 contestants, the
competition was fierce for the five young ladies
to make the court. Chosen in the court were
fourth maid Heather Flippin, third maid Katya
Kesterson, second maid Kasey Nicholson, first
maid Brittany Russell, and queen Brittany
Lessenberry. These students will represent
McKenzie High School at the Fish Fry and
Strawberry Festival parades. Brittany
Lessenberry will compete in the West Tennessee
Strawberry Festival Pageant. Congratulations to
these students.
School will not be in session on Friday, March
12, and Monday, March 15 for our first spring
break. School will resume on Tuesday, March 16.
