Congressman John Tanner recently sent a newsletter to
school asking us to relay information to students and
parents about the military academies. For those juniors
interested in applying for a congressional appointment
to attend one of the prestigious academies, they should
begin the process now. Interested students and parents
can go to Congressman Tanner's Web site, http://www.house.gov/tanner,
to get basic information about the application process.
Another way of getting information is to write to the
district office in Millington at 8120 Highway 51 North,
Suite 3, Millington, TN 38053. Students and parents need
to be aware of the tight deadlines and the information
required to satisfy those deadlines. The entire
nomination packet must be completed by November 30,
2004. If anyone has questions, he/she should call the
school.
The Board of Education of the McKenzie Special School
District is again sponsoring the attendance of four
students to SCOPE (Student Congress on Policies in
Education) on March 22 at Tennessee State University -
the downtown campus. Clint Anderson, James Carter, Kelly
Fowler, and Virginia Hames were nominated and selected
by the staff to participate in this year's SCOPE
Conference. They will debate current issues and policies
in education, engage in mock school board meetings, and
complete surveys to gauge student opinion on a wide
range of subjects. McKenzie High School has participated
in this activity for years, and we are pleased that the
Board of Education recognizes this quality program with
an opportunity for our students to interact with student
leaders from across the state. Ms. Ladona Herrin, our
guidance counselor, will chaperone the students to the
conference.
Last week the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship (TELS)
Program released its Web site address for parents and
students. The Web site is a user friendly site that
directs interested parties to links to answer questions
about the scholarship money. The Web site is
www.tnscholardollars.com. The site introduces "Scholar
Dollars" as the umbrella name for the five TELS awards,
including the HOPE Scholarship, need - and merit-based
awards, the Access Grant, and the Wilder-Naifeh
Technical Skills Grant. The TELS program has a May 1
deadline for students who wish to apply for the
scholarship money. To answer other questions, TELS has a
telephone number for direct information (615-741-1346).
Spring sports sponsored by the TSSAA will begin this
week with many of our teams gearing up for action. The
baseball team has several games slated for the week
including at Westview on Monday, at home against Henry
County on Tuesday, at Union City on Wednesday, at home
against Union City on Thursday, and at home against
Stewart County on Friday. The softball team will open
their season at home against Waverly on Tuesday and then
travel to Jackson for the JCM Tournament on Friday and
Saturday. The soccer team has its initial match of the
season at Milan on Tuesday at 5:30. They have their
first home match against T.C.A. on Thursday at 4:30. The
track and tennis teams will begin their seasons later in
the month.
This week students will begin registering for next
year's classes. Ms. Herrin will have a one-on-one
meeting with each student to determine what classes to
take for the following year and to revise the 6-year
plan as needed. Students will be assigned an appointment
to meet with Ms. Herrin individually. The appointment
reminders will be handed out to the students on the
Monday of their scheduled times. Ms. Herrin will review
their progress to date and what courses need to be taken
to satisfy their pathway requirement. Rising seniors
will register from March 18-23; rising juniors from
March 25-30; and rising sophomores from April 1-6. Our
student handbook states that students with a sophomore
classification must have at least 6 credits. Juniors
must be in their third year and have earned at least 13
credits. Seniors must have a minimum of 20 credits and
in their fourth year.
Parents are to be aware that report cards will be issued
on Wednesday, March 17. This marks the mid-point of the
term. Students will have approximately 9 weeks left in
the school year to earn four credits for the second
semester. Students who are borderline passing or failing
will receive a telephone call from the teacher of the
affected class. Parents are encouraged to discuss
student progress openly with the teacher and to arrange
a conference if the need is there. It is our intention
for all students to succeed. Teachers are available for
additional help before school, after school, or during
homeroom. Let's create a positive partnership for the
benefit of the student.
McKenzie High School faculty, staff, and students are
saddened by the death of Crystal Lewis, a 2003 graduate
of our school. Crystal died in a tragic accident on
March 7 while returning from a church retreat in Paris.
I fondly remember the warm smile and sweet nature of
Crystal and will miss that as will her family and
friends. I do remember Crystal's service to her church
and youth group and know that her brief stay here with
us made us all better people. I pray that God will give
her family and friends and our school the comfort and
consolation that we seek in this time of tragedy.
