MHS Art instructor Glynda Corbin has been accepted as a
participant in the 2004 Tennessee Arts Academy, a week
of intensive training in arts education for Tennessee
teachers. The academy is recognized as an innovative
teacher training program of the highest quality. The
clinicians are nationally recognized artists and
educators. In addition there are performances by
singers, instrumentalists, and actors. An art gallery
tour is also part of the workshop experience. Guest
speakers, including directors, lyricists, designers,
sculptors, and concert pianists, share the importance of
the arts in day-to-day living. The academy is held each
year in June at Belmont University in Nashville with an
emphasis on visual arts, music, and drama for Tennessee
secondary school teachers. Ms. Corbin will attend the
workshop scheduled for June 21 through June 25.
Art projects done by James Carter, Megan Cox, Zach Drye,
Katya Kesterson, Kent Ozment, and Justin Taylor have
been selected to represent McKenzie High School in the
county high school art competition sponsored by Carroll

Bank and Trust in Huntingdon for all of next week. The
bank honored all participants, their families, and
school officials with a reception at 3:30 P.M. on
Friday, March 19. The outstanding projects in the county
were recognized at that time with $100, $75, and $50
prizes for first, second, and third places respectively.
Out of 6 ribbons awarded, MHS students won four. Katya
Kesterson won the $75.00 2nd place ribbon, and James
Carter won 3rd place and $50.00. James also won an
honorable mention ribbon along with Justin Taylor.
Congratulations to these students and MHS art teacher
Glynda Corbin.

19th Annual Honors Banquet at the high school. The
McKenzie Rotary Club will again sponsor this event.
Approximately 95 students have earned the right to
attend this year's program having achieved a 92 or above

their Rotarian sponsors will attend the banquet at 6:30
P.M. in the cafeteria. Parents and any other friend of
McKenzie High School may attend the awards portion at
7:30 P.M. The special guest speaker for the evening will
be Jeff Webb, a 1974 alumnus of our school. Jeff is now
an editorial writer and opinion page columnist for the
St. Petersburg Times, the largest circulation newspaper
in Florida.
Several upcoming events for parents to note. On
Wednesday there will be a Project Graduation meeting at
6:00 P.M. in the library. All seniors and their parents
are encouraged to attend. On Monday, March 29, we have
two events to note. The Balfour representative will meet
with the sophomore class during homeroom about ring

about style and prices of rings. They will order on
April 1. Also, on March 29, the band will have a meeting
of parents and students about the trip to Florida. This
meeting will be at 7:00 P.M. in the library. The agent
from Thomas Tours will be here to answer questions and
explain the procedures/guidelines of the trip.
Last week the Journalism class published the first
edition of The Red Bullet, the school newspaper. The
paper included a wide range of topics including teacher
interviews, editorials and opinions, sports and events,
entertainment, and general school news. Ms. Jo Ann
Young, the journalism teacher, organized her class so
that all students had a role to fill in the publication
of the paper. The paper will appear weekly and will sell
for 25¢.
The soccer team played its first match in school history
against the Milan Bulldogs. The Bulldogs, behind the
strength of two foreign exchange students, defeated the
Rebels 5-1. Freshman Carson Rider scored for the Rebels
in the first half. The team made a great showing for a
first match against a school that has fielded several
district champions. On Thursday, the team played their
first home game against Trinity Christian Academy. The
team put up a spirited defense, particularly in the
second half, but fell to the more experienced visitors
by a score of 6-1. Senior Jose Becerra scored the lone
goal for the Rebels. The team's next game is at USJ on
Monday, March 29.
The baseball team began its spring campaign with two
games against the Golden Tornadoes of Union City. On
Wednesday the Rebels traveled to Union City for their
premier game of the season. They brought back a victory
by a score of 7-6. Strong relief pitching by Drew Hayes
and some timely hitting accounted for the win. On
Thursday the Rebels again played the Golden Tornadoes.
The breaks that went their way on Wednesday went to the
visitors on Thursday. Despite a 2-2 day by Robert Jones
and 2-4 for Mark Ghyers, the Rebels lost 7-5. On Friday,
the Rebels again played at home against the Rebels of
Stewart County. The Rebels prevailed - MHS that is - by
a score of 12-2. Sophomore Beau Brown picked up the win
for the home team. He had excellent offensive support
from the team with 12 hits including a double and triple
by Mark Ghyers and a double by Jake Smith. Games this
week are at Milan on Monday, at home against Riverside
on Friday, and at the Sports Plus Tournament in Jackson
on Saturday through Thursday of next week.
The Rebounders Club will sponsor the Basketball Banquet
this Thursday at 6:30 P.M. at the high school. We will
honor our girls and boys teams as well as our
cheerleaders. The banquet itself will be in the
cafeteria and the awards portion of the program will be
in the Theater. Tickets are on sale in the office for
$7.00. Players, cheerleaders, coaches, and special
guests are paid for by the Rebounders Club which has
supported the program well this year.
The softball team has several games this week. They play
Bruceton on Monday, Milan on Tuesday, Huntingdon on
Wednesday, and Camden on Thursday. All games will be at
home. The Thursday game will be at 4:00. All others will
be at 4:30. This weekend they competed in the JCM
Invitational Tournament at Jackson. They finished the
tournament with a 5-1 record losing to Chester County in
the finals. Along the way to the championship game, the
Lady Rebels defeated Liberty Magnet High School of
Jackson, Crockett County, JCM, and South Side (2).
Brittany Carpenter, Lauren Perritt, and NiCole West
pitched well for the Lady Rebels who began the year with
a strong showing. Chosen to the All-Tournament team were
Brooke Cole, Brittany Carpenter, NiCole West, and Carol
Perritt. Kayla Bomar received Honorable Mention
accolades.
