The girls’ and boys’ basketball teams ended their
seasons last week in the 6-AA Regional Tournament in
Chester County. On Thursday, the girls made a valiant
effort against the Lady Tigers of Bolivar, but
fell short 56- 51. Pacing the Lady Rebels was Hope Wyder
who scored 17 points against the taller and more
athletic team from Bolivar. The girls ended their season
at 17-10, but captured the regular season district crown
and the second place district tournament position. Lady
Rebels Mallory Brandon, Sarah Hartz, Brittany Russell,
and Hope Wyder ended their high school careers. Each
represented the program well in their four years of
involvement.
The Rebels found themselves in a precarious situation
by finishing fourth in the district and drawing the
number one seed for the other district and the number
one team in the state, the Bolivar Central Tigers. The
Tigers wasted no time in showing the reason for their
number one ranking as they raced out to a 24- 6
first quarter lead and never looked back. With a team
that fielded 15-18 quality performers, they outdistanced
the Rebels 86- 51. John French with 17 and Bryan Huffman
with 11 led the offense. Playing their last game for
theRed and Gray were seniors Daniel Duncan, John French,
John Craig Howell, and Bryan Huffman. The program will
miss the unique contributions of each of these young
men. The Rebels completed a 10- 18 season. The
basketball banquet is set for Thursday, March 25.
Also ending their athletic careers last week were our
three senior cheerleaders - Savanna Cooper, Amanda
Rogers, and Carrie Stambaugh. These three girls have
proven instrumental in our cheerleading squad’s success
at the TSSAA Division I Competition. They have won
the State Championship for the past two years in the
Cheer Division, Non-building. Our school and athletic
programs will miss their hard work and many hours
of sacrifice to have a solid cheerleading squad. Last
Friday our Minority Council sponsored its annual Black
History Month program. The program highlighted the
talents of several of our black students who entertained
our student body with song, readings, skits, and
interpretative dance. The Reverend Chris Johnson,
associate pastor of Greater Enon Baptist Church, spoke
eloquently about individual responsibility and the
obligation that everyone has to create a better world.
The Minority Council meets monthly with me to offer
insights and voice concerns about school operations.
With the Principal’s Advisory Council, they provide
direct input to the administration and have supplied
many ideas that have been implemented into programs or
policy guidelines. I appreciate the service of each of
these groups to
make our school a better place.
The 39th annual Tennessee Junior Science and
Humanities Symposium was held at the University of
Tennessee at Knoxville and the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory on February 26-28. The symposium is a highly
selective and highly competitive program in which high
school students from across the state vie for possible
college scholarships. The symposium selected sophomores
Lee Barham, Caleb Owen, and Brice Priestly to
participate in this year’s activities. These three will
complete an original scientific project and
compete in next year’s symposium. While at the
symposium, the students heard presentations from
scientific and military personnel from all over the
United States. They also toured the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory and saw the latest in technology and
scientific research. The students were accompanied by
McKenzie High School biology teacher, Kevin Gallimore.
The band will sponsor beauty pageants on Friday and
Saturday this week in the high school theatre. On
Friday, they will have the Little Miss and Mr. Pageant
beginning at 7:00 P.M. On Saturday, they will have the
Junior Miss McKenzie Pageant followed by the Miss
McKenzie Pageant again starting at 7:00 P.M. Proceeds
for the two-night events will go toward the operational
expenses of the band for the upcoming year. Admission
for each night is $5.00 per person. We are rapidly
approaching the mid-term for the spring semester. On
Tuesday, March 9, we will have our First and Fourth
Block exams. On Wednesday, March 10, we will have our
Second and Third Block exams. It is a good time to begin
preparation for these assessments. All students will be
required to take the comprehensive tests which count 25%
of the students’ grade for the first nine weeks. Report
cards for the nine weeks will be issued on Wednesday,
March 17.
Our spring sports teams have begun practice for the
upcoming season. Currently, we have these spring sports:
baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, and track. These
sports are coached by Josh Kee, George Ognibene, Randy
Thomas, Dan Ridley, and David Duncan espectively. The
regular season for each of these sports cannot begin
until the week of March 15. Watch in the Banner for
scheduled events in these sports and support these
athletes as they represent our school. |
