The Class of 2004 cordially invites family, friends, and
alumni to its commencement exercises on Friday, May 14,
at 8:00 P.M. This graduation will be the 80th by the
McKenzie Special School District and the 95th overall
for McKenzie public schools. The Class of 2004 has
distinguished itself in many ways, especially
academically. Of the 76 graduates, the class has 35 Beta
Club members and possibly as many as 28 honor graduates.
It has tested well in standardized testing and has
numerous students earning scholarships at colleges and
universities. As with any graduation, McKenzie High
School asks that the audience observe the proper decorum
during the ceremony - one of the few in which people
participate today. Each graduate deserves to have his or
her name heard. Distractions during the presentation of
diplomas are poor ways to honor those deserving
graduates. We will celebrate when the last graduate
crosses the stage.
The track team competed in the Dyersburg Invitational
last Friday in preparation for the upcoming regional
track meet. The boys had four people who placed in
various events. Shawn Luna threw the shot put and the
discus to earn fourth and sixth place respectively. Kris
Sydnor heaved the discus to a third place finish. In
track events, Greg Pruitt ran the 800 meter race for
third place and Jesse Owens had a sixth place run in the
same event. The girls track team continued to improve
placing 4th overall out of the 13 teams competing. Amber
King ran for 2nd in the 3200 meter race and 4th in the
1600 meter run - two grueling races that require stamina
and conditioning. The 1600 meter relay team of Amber
King, Sarah Hartz, Katya Kesterson and Samantha Doster
ran for 4th place. Freshman Anna Trull had a good meet
with a 5th place in the 200 meter, 4th in the triple
jump, 5th in the 100 meters, and 6th in the long jump.
The 400 meter relay team of Hartz, Trull, Renee Crawley,
and Rachael Clark gained 6th place. Rachael Clark ran
the 100 meter hurdles for the first time, but still
finished 5th. The 3200 meter relay team of Kesterson,
Doster, Brooke Ridley, and Danielle Mason grabbed the
5th slot. In the 800 meter, Sarah Hartz ran well for
2nd. In the field events, Crawley threw the shot put for
3rd place while Doster and Jessica Johnson threw the
discus to finish 2nd and 3rd. This week the teams will
compete in the regional track meet at USJ on Thursday.
They vie for an opportunity to advance to the sectional
meet the following week.
The baseball team played the Camden Lions in District
11-AA action last Thursday. The Rebels held a tenuous
2-1 lead going into the sixth inning. Unfortunately, the
momentum shifted quickly as the Lions racked up seven
runs in two innings to pull out a win 8-2. The Rebels
were again plagued by weak hitting, managing just four
hits. John French led the Rebels with a 2-3 performance
at the plate. The Rebels continued action on Monday with
the results unavailable. Another loss ends the season
for the Rebels.
The softball team fared better in its opening round game
in the district against Lexington. The Lady Rebels
pounded nine hits in recording a 6-2 win. Brittany
Carpenter held the Lady Tigers in check by scattering
six hits over seven innings. She improved her personal
record to 13-5. The Lady Rebels are 19-11. Lauren
Perritt had a perfect day at the plate by going 3-3.
This week the Lady Rebels were scheduled to play 6:00
P.M. Tuesday night the winner of Camden-Riverside.
The soccer team had three games last week against good
competition. On Tuesday, they traveled to Lexington to
face the Tigers. As they have all season, the Rebels
competed and scrapped but came up in the short end of
3-1 game. Caleb Owen scored for the Rebels. On Thursday,
the team ended the regular season against Madison Magnet
Academy of Jackson. After leading the first half, the
team played hard but was tied 2-2 to end the contest.
Scoring the two goals was Jose Becerra. In the first
round of the district, the Rebels traveled to Adamsville
on Friday. The Rebels pulled a hard earned 2-1 victory
over the host team. Jose Becerra scored on a break-away
and Lee Barham scored on a free kick.
Congratulations to the Marching Rebels for bringing home
the following awards from the Strawberry Festival
Parade: 3rd place overall - guard; 2nd place overall
drum major; and for the second consecutive year - the
Overall Sweepstakes trophy in Class B. MHS was in
competition with five other band in Class B and twelve
bands overall.
Don Hayes Photography will meet with members of the
junior class on Thursday to discuss senior pictures.
Girls need to have a group of three and boys a group of
four with possible dates in mind before this meeting in
which the photographer will schedule the senior
pictures. Students who choose not to have this
photographer do their senior pictures will need to
arrange a composite photo shot from him. Mr. Hayes gives
the senior composite each year free of charge, but the
photos must be taken by him. He does charge a sitting
fee for those who want their photograph in the
composite.
We are quickly winding down the year. Several upcoming
dates of significance are as follows:
May 17 Baseball Banquet @ the Vision Room of Bethel
College - 6:00 P.M.
May 19 Final Exams for underclassmen - First and Fourth
Blocks
May 20 Final Exams for underclassmen - Second and Third
Blocks - 1/2 day for students
May 21 Report Cards - 9:30 - 11:30 - Front Lobby
