The boys tennis team defeated Martin Westview 6-1
yesterday for their second consecutive win. Number two
seed David King defeated his opponent 8-1. Holland Hames
at number three beat his seed 8-0. Justin Petering (#4)
and Cody Brown (#5) also bageled their players. In
doubles action, Daniel Duncan and David King were
victorious 8-1. Hames and Petering had an identical
score in powdering their counterparts. In girls' action,
the Lady Rebels lost to Martin Westview 4-2. Meredith
McKinney won her singles match 8-2. She teamed with Kari
Sydnor in doubles to win 9-7.
The Carroll County Future Problem Solving Team competed
in the state contest last week and earned first place in
the state in the written competition. The team is made
up of Kate Hames, Lee Barham, Caleb Owen, and Jessica
Tucker (a student from Huntingdon High School). The
contest took place at Friendship Christian Academy in
Lebanon and featured 11 qualifying teams from across the
state. To qualify schools had to submit a written packet
and to place in the top 40% to go to Lebanon to compete.
In the state contest, students had to perform an
original, creative skit and write a packet within a
2-hour time frame on Media Impact. The hypothetical
problem dealt with an individual with great wealth who
had purchased multiple media outlets and had begun to
slant the news to his own philosophy and outlook. The
four students had to think of 16 solutions to the
problem, prioritize the list, and then develop a
full-blown solution from the list of the 16 choices.
Kate, Lee, Caleb, and Jessica have qualified for the
International Future Problem Solving Competition in
Lexington, Kentucky, in June. Congratulations to them
and good luck at the higher level as they represent
Tennessee.
Because of inclement weather and scheduling, the
softball team had a light beginning of the week. On
Tuesday, they played their final home game of the year
against Riverside. Neither team could muster much
offense. Brittany Carpenter pitched a four-hit shutout
as the home team scored the winning run in the bottom of
the seventh. Carol Perritt drove in the winning run with
a long drive to left field. The Lady Rebels improved to
17-7 and 4-3 in the district. Brittany Carpenter
improved her personal record to 11-3. On Thursday, the
Lady Rebels played the Lady Tigers of Lexington. Again
the Lady Rebel offense could not produce hits and runs
and lost 3-0 to the Lady Tigers. The girls outhit their
opponent, but could not bunch the hits together. This
weekend they played in the annual Waverly Tournament
which features some of the best teams in the state. The
team finished with a 1-3 record. They defeated
Clarksville Northwest by a score of 5-1. Their losses
were to Henry County (2-0), Chester County (2-1), and
Murfreesboro Riverdale (5-1). Although losses are not
what the team wants, they often are the foundation for
learning and for getting better. Let's hope that is the
case as we begin this last week of the regular season
and the start of district tournament action. This week
the girls played a doubleheader at Henry County on
Monday, District tournament action is slated on Thursday
with a home against Lexington.
Gateway exams will be given this week on May 4-6. The
three Gateway exams will be in Algebra I, English II,
and Biology I. These tests count 15% of the second
semester grade and are required to pass for graduation
purposes. We will also have the English I end-of-course
exams at this time.
On Sunday, May 9, we will have our Baccalaureate Service
at Bethel College at 8:00 P.M. This religious service is
for those students who choose to participate. It is
organized and arranged by the McKenzie Ministerial
Alliance. Several students will have an active role in
the service. The Reverend Alvin Summers will be the
pastor for the event. The public is invited to attend.
Prior to Baccalaureate, Don Hayes Photography will be
present to do photographs. He will set up in the Waddell
Recital Hall. He will be ready to do the photographs at
7:00 P.M. Seniors have been given a flyer with prices
for this opportunity.
The baseball team played at Stewart County on Tuesday
and defeated the home team by a score of 21-4. Mark
Ghyers, pitching for the first time this season, picked
up the win. Jake Smith went 4 for 5 with a home run to
lead the Rebels. Other leading hitters for the Rebels
were Robert Jones (3-5) and Mark Ghyers (3-5). On
Thursday, the Rebels faced powerhouse Milan. They were
no match for the visiting Bulldogs who defeated the home
team 17-4. On Friday the Rebels traveled to
Parsons-Riverside in another important district game.
The offense failed to generate the needed runs and the
Rebels lost 5-2. This week the Rebels play Huntingdon on
Monday and begin district tournament action at Milan.
Call the school for more information.
The soccer team played Trenton Peabody at home on
Thursday confident of a competitive game. The two teams
played evenly until the visitors scored just before
halftime. The one goal stood the challenge and Trenton
came away with a 1-0 victory. The Rebels played well
defensively, but could not score the goal needed to
overtake the Golden Tide. This week the team has a game
at Lexington on Tuesday and at home against Madison
Magnet Academy on Thursday. The soccer district
tournament begins Saturday at USJ.
The trap team shot in Murfreesboro Saturday. Out of 173
shooters, the boys' team placed 1st. Members of the
boys' team were Lee Russell, Carson Rider, Will Merrick,
Kendall Smith, and Matthew Taylor. Samantha Doster was
the only girl from our school who competed. She won 1st
in the girls' division.
The State DARE Role Model program recently named MHS
freshman Brittany Martin as its representative to the
National Youth Advisory Board. Brittany submitted a
resume and written essay along with a recommendation
from local DARE officer and School Resource Officer
Jackie Sykes. Brittany will attend the national
conference in Nashville in July with over 2000 officers
from across the United States and the world. This fall
she will go to Quantico, Virginia, to meet with the
50-member Youth Advisory Board. Brittany's appointment
will be for 2-3 years. She will be expected to perform
community service activities to enrich our school and
city. Upon graduation, Brittany will be eligible to
apply for one of two $20,000 scholarships for those
students who have had the greatest positive effect in
their community. DARE is a program devoted to keeping
peers drug and alcohol free. The high school DARE Role
models have worked with students at the middle school
and have helped Officer Sykes with other positive
activities. Congratulations to Brittany and her
commitment to make a positive difference.
