The girls' and boys' basketball teams will kick off the
year with the Huntingdon Basketball Jamboree this
Saturday. The girls will play at 5:00 P.M. and the boys
will play at 5:45. The regular season will begin the
following Tuesday with a home game against Clarksburg.
The girls have had a full pre-season of scrimmages with
schools such as Dyer County, Trenton, and Jackson
Christian School. They plan to scrimmage Humboldt on the
16th as the final preparation before the jamboree. The
girls are led by first year Coach Joan Albury and her
assistant Mary Bess Driggers. The boys team has begun
practice in earnest following the end of the football
season. They will try to replace four graduated starters
from last year, but have many players with 2-3 years of
extensive B-team experience. Coach Larry Joe Smith
assisted by Dan Ridley lead this year's squad.
We are selling basketball season passes in the front
office for $30 for a single ticket, $60 for a family of
two, $90 for a family of three, and $110 for a family of
four. These passes are good for all high school
freshmen, B-team, and varsity home games. They are
passes that are not transferable and are a significant
savings for our fans. You are welcome to come to the
office during school hours to take advantage of these
tickets. With our first game on the 23rd of November, it
would be wise to get the tickets this week. Also our
basketball players will be selling tickets to the
jamboree for $3.00. All money collected in advance will
remain at the school. Money at the gate will remain at
the host school.
Our five students involved in Youth Leadership Carroll
County will have their second seminar on Thursday,
November 18. These students are Clint Anderson, Rachael
Clark, Kimberly Gaskins, Virginia Hames, and Carol
Perritt. They will meet with other young people from our
county schools in this leadership-building program.
The football banquet to honor this year's team will be
scheduled after the Christmas holidays. At this event,
we will recognize all of our players, lettermen,
cheerleaders, and special award winners. We will have
more information closer to the date.
Students and parents may be interested in two websites
that discuss the lottery money for Tennessee graduates.
The two sites are www.state.tn.us/tsac and
www.tnscholardollars.com. Both sites have a great deal
of information about the lottery money including the
application process, guidelines, responsibilities, etc.
It includes a wealth of information about budgeting,
college aid calculation, college cost estimation,
eligible institutions for Tennessee Student Assistance
Corporation, and other similar information. I encourage
parents and seniors to investigate these two sites.
Along these same lines Ms. Herrin will have a Senior
Information Night on November 30, at 7:00 P.M. in the
Theater at the high school. This annual program gives
parents and students a vast amount of information as
they begin work on the next three or four critical
months of decision-making for the Class of 2005. This
program benefits parents and students and helps direct
them in choosing options to follow after graduation.
Certainly students will need to make hard choices by the
middle of January, and parents will need to complete the
FAFSA as soon as possible if their senior is planning to
attend a vocation/technical school, community college,
or 4-year college or university.
Our juniors will have the opportunity to take the ASVAB
on Tuesday, November 23. The ASVAB is a thorough
aptitude test that assists Ms. Herrin in advising
students toward a career choice. It is administered by
the military and produces a wealth of information for
our students to consider in reaching educational or
career choices. The military does return to our school
to discuss the results thoroughly and interpret the data
for our students.
We will again have Time-for-Time this Saturday beginning
at 7:00 a.m. and ending at 1:00 p.m. We will not meet on
November 27, which is the weekend of our Thanksgiving
break.
Last Wednesday I attended the Tennessee Secondary School
Athletic Association meeting at Jackson for the western
region. At this meeting, several schools and people were
recognized. Coach Wade Comer, our head football coach,
was recognized as the Male Coach of the Year for the
2003-04 school year. Jim Ward, our superintendent, was
recognized as the Superintendent of the Year. McKenzie
High School received recognition as an A. F. Bridges
Finalists in Class AA for sportsmanship and right
conduct. I am extremely proud of our coaches, players,
cheerleaders, and fans for helping us receive this
special recognition. It is an annual goal that I have as
an administrator for our school to perform up to the
high standards of the award. Also, congratulations to
Coach Comer and Mr. Ward for their role in making our
football and athletics program not just competitive but
fair and just.
We will observe Thanksgiving on November 24-26. School
will not be in session those three weekdays. School will
re-open on November 29. Because of the Thanksgiving
holiday, I will not have an article the week of November
22.
As always, I hope everyone has a great week and
Thanksgiving holiday.
