The cross-country teams competed in the Obion County
Invitational Meet last Tuesday at Troy. The girls
improved their times significantly in this meet. Hannah
Scruton finished in ninth place with a time of 21:34.
Caitlin Blackwell (32nd place) and Chloe Cunningham
(33rd place) ran sub-30 minute times with 28:01 and
29:32. The boys' squad also showed remarkable
improvement. Caleb Owen finished with a time of 17
minutes flat to finish in 12th place. Our top finishers
in addition to Caleb were Matt Blaylock with a time
17:32 (19th place), James Lee in 18:34 for 29th place,
Brice Priestley in 18:35 for 30th place, and Chase
Mitchell in 19:24 for 39th place. This week the teams
will travel to Dyersburg for the Best of the West
Competition on Thursday, October 21. This meet will
serve as a prelude to the regional meet at Covington on
Thursday, October 28.
Ms. Champion's First Block Chemistry II class will
celebrate Mole Day along with hundreds of Chemistry
classes across the United States. Mole Day is a
celebration of life of the chemist/mathematician Amedeo
Avogadro. Avogadro determined an important counting unit
used in chemistry which he labeled a mole. The mole is
equal to 6.02 x 1023 particles in the counting unit.
Avogadro determined the volume of a mole of gas in 1811,
and the unit has since become an important measurement
unit for chemists. Mrs. Champion has plans to do a
number of fun-filled activities to mark this discovery.
On Friday, October 22, we will take our club and
organization pictures for the yearbook. We will do this
during the morning when the majority of our students are
here and take them during a block of time so as to not
disrupt too much of the day. We will also take the
senior group photograph for the yearbook. Also on this
day seniors may have their photograph for the composite
taken. This does not apply to seniors who have already
had our school photographer, Don Hayes, take the shot
during the summer. Mr. Hayes does charge a $25.00
sitting fee for a composite.
On Thursday, October 21, the five seniors chosen to
participate in Youth Leadership Carroll County will meet
at the Chamber of Commerce office in Huntingdon for
their first session. Those representing McKenzie High
School are Clint Anderson, Kimberly Gaskins, Rachael
Clark, Virginia Hames, and Carol Perritt. The first
session will deal with team-building and with a
discussion about the state of Carroll County. These
students, chosen independently, pay a $60.00 tuition to
attend these sessions as a means of making their
commitment more personal. With the four sessions,
students will learn about local and county governments
and about the business/industries that contribute to
Carroll County. We appreciate the Carroll County Chamber
of Commerce in offering this educational program to our
students.
At our home football game this Friday against Martin
Westview, the Key Club will participate in a
trick-or-treat for U.N.I.C.E.F. Members of the club will
locate themselves at the gates and ask for contributions
to this event. U.N.I.C.E.F. is a program of the United
Nations that advances humanity with the goal of
providing health, education, equality, and protection
for every child. Since 1947, the U.S. Fund for
U.N.I.C.E.F. has promoted fundraisers for its programs
and increasing public awareness of the challenges facing
the world's children. Since 1950 the Trick-or-Treat
Program has raised over $123 million for children in
over 160 countries to provide better nutrition,
medicine, clean water, education, emergency relief, and
other support to children. The Key Club has made this an
annual mission. I encourage you to help them to help
others. Key Club sponsor is Mrs. Jennifer Champion.
Parents should have received report cards for the first
9-week grading period last Thursday. Report cards were
to be signed and returned to the students' First Block
teachers. In looking at the grades, I found several
interesting results. Twenty-four percent of all grades
issued were A's; 28% were B's; 25% were C's; 13% were
D's; and 10% were F's. A total of 7% of our students
made all A's; 6% had three A's; 10% earned 2 A's; and
24% made one A. Twenty-nine (29) students made the High
Honor Roll for students with no grade below 95.
Thirty-four (34) students achieved placement on the
Honor Roll for students with an A average and no grade
below 89. Sixty-one (61) students made the Merit Roll
for students for students with a B average and no grade
below 85. On the reverse side, we had an unacceptable
24% of our students an A. I plan to meet with all
students who failed a class this week to discuss plans,
goals, and strategies to make improvement.
Last Friday night the Rebels played their most important
game of the season - one that would determine the status
of their post-season. The Eagles of Chester County came
to Rebel Stadium with determination to knock off the
home team and secure itself a post-season game. The
Rebels had the same goal in mind. The Rebels jumped to a
6-0 lead on its first possession. The 2-point conversion
failed. Chester County wasted little time in forging
ahead 7-6. The Rebels responded with a 9 minute 30
second drive that combined the punishing running of
senior Cody Cook with the accurate passing of Drew Hayes
to score a touchdown. The successful 2-point conversion
made the score 14-7. The Eagles matched the score 23
seconds later with a 67-yard touchdown scamper to knot
the score at 14-14. In the second half, the Rebels again
played ball control eating up the clock and gaining
yards. A touchdown and field goal provided the final
margin of victory 24-14. The Rebels ran their record to
5-3 overall, 2-2 in the region. The entire team picked
up its play for four quarters. The offensive line
blocked well generally; the defense played well for the
most part; and the skilled people (Cody Cook - 171 yards
rushing; Drew Hayes - 241 yards passing; and Randy Lacey
- 15 receptions) all had huge games. This week the
Rebels again play at home for their final home game of
the season against the powerful Charges of Martin
Westview. We will recognize our senior band members,
cheerleaders, and football players at 7:00 P.M. Come out
and show your appreciation for these young people.
Kick-off is set for 7:30 P.M.
The band competed in the Trenton Marching Band
Invitational last Saturday. In their class, they earned
third place in guard, percussion, and drum major. They
will compete this week at Union City as their final
tune-up before the Division I State Competition in
Murfreesboro. Good luck to them as they represent our
school.
As always, I hope everyone has a great week.
