The Business Professionals of America Club held its
election of officers for the 2004-05 school year.
Elected to represent the club were the following
students: Nicole Parham, president; Samantha Doster,
vice-president; Brandie Carveiro and Sheena Adams,
co-secretaries; Amanda Ferguson, treasurer; Kia Bell,
reporter; Tabitha Shell, historian; Lauren Hickman,
parliamentarian; and Laken Comer, Student Council
representative. The B.P.A. Club is made up of students
who are currently taking or have taken business-related
courses at McKenzie High School. Students compete in
regional and state competitions in areas that focus on
business issues. The B.P.A. sponsor is second-year
teacher Jeannine Lowe.
Another active club, the Renaissance Club, also elected
its slate of officers for the year. Those elected
include the following: Bethany Ellis, president; Lauren
Morris, vice-president; Chase Mitchell, secretary; Zach
Drye, treasurer; Aaron Greenberg, reporter; and Brianna
Crocker, Student Council representative. The Renaissance
Club is devoted to students who enjoy the arts -
specifically the visual arts, music, and drama.
Activities include student participation in a number of
county and district art contests, decorating the
building for homecoming, creating backdrops for school
photographs, and fundraising for equipment that promotes
the artistic abilities of our students. The Renaissance
Club sponsor is Glynda Corbin.
The girls' golf team split in their Tuesday match at
Riverside. They defeated Riverside, but lost to Bolivar.
The girls were led by Kristi Petering with a 57. The
boys' team also split with the same two teams as they
absorbed their first loss of the season. The Rebels were
paced by Marshall Smith, Justin Petering, and Jake
Brown. All three shot 40. The boys' record now stands at
17-1. The girls have a 6-7 record. This week they had a
match at Milan against Milan and Westview on Monday and
at home against Camden and Riverside on Tuesday.
The cross country season began last Tuesday with a meet
at USJ. Fifteen teams competed in the meet which
measured the typical three-plus miles across natural
terrain. Freshman Hannah Scruton paced the girls' team
with a time of 26:55. She finished 44th. Also
representing our school were Caitlin Blackwell and Chloe
Cunningham. The boys' team finished a competitive 6th
place out of the 15 schools. Junior Caleb Owen ran 19:01
for 10th place and Brice Priestly ran 20:07 for 30th
place.
The Rebel football team upped its record to 2-1 with a
36-26 win over the Choctaws of Dyer County. The game was
a contest of two halves. The Rebels showed remarkable
fire power in rolling to a 29-7 halftime lead. The
offense made great play after great play to easily
outdistance the Choctaws. The second half was a
different story as the host school gained momentum and
scored 19 points to make the game interesting. The
Choctaws pounded the ball for two fourth quarter scores
and closed to within 10 points, but the Rebel offense
got possession and ran out the clock. Cody Cook rushed
for over 120 years and Drew Hayes passed for four
touchdowns and over 200 years to pace the offense. Randy
Lacey added nine receptions as he continues to lead West
Tennessee receivers. The Rebels will face a difficult
Adamsville Cardinal team this week as they remain on the
road.
On Thursday of last week, we held our fall
Parent-Teacher Conference. Parents met with teachers to
discuss strengths and weaknesses as well as strategies
to improve academic or behavioral issues. Overall 62% of
our parents attended this important meeting with our
teachers. Breaking the numbers by grades, 54% of our
freshmen parents attended, 65% of our sophomore parents,
68% of our junior parents, and 59% of our senior
parents. Because the freshman first semester often sets
the tone for a student's four-year performance, I would
have liked and expected more participation from that
group. As always, if a parent would like to talk with
our teachers, he/she may call during the day and set up
a time to talk or meet with a teacher during the
teacher's planning block. Our mid-term tests are October
7 and 8 with report cards issued on October 14. Parents
who were unable to attend Thursday's conference should
have received progress reports for each class on Friday.
Our Technology Club had its kickoff organizational
meeting last week. The club is responsible for the
upgrading and maintenance of the school Web site. They
are committed to giving of their time to its design and
also to adding new or current information for each link
on the site. The school website is
www.mckenziehighschool.org. In a few weeks, they will
make progress toward its upgrade. Members of the club
include Wendy Brown, Lauren Hickman, Kellett Hochreiter,
Katya Kesterson, O C Melton, Tabitha Shell, Daniel
Thomas, and Andrew Wilson. Sponsor of the Technology
Club is Dianne Anderson.
A new club at school that has flexed its muscle is the
MHS Pep Club. It now numbers approximately 90 members.
Its goal is to promote school spirit and to support our
athletic teams. The unofficial title of the group is the
McKenzie Maniacs - so called because of their intense,
verbal support of our teams. The club makes signs and
posters and generally backs the team in a positive way.
The club is led by a parliament made up of Lee Barham,
Craig Broadbent, Hunter Downing, Holland Hames, James
Lee, Caleb Owen, Brice Priestley, and Marshall Smith.
Ladona Herrin serves as their sponsor.
School will not be in session on Monday, September 20.
Many of our certified staff will have a professional
development day.
As always, have a great week.
