The cross country teams competed at Union University in
a meet sponsored by Liberty Tech High School in Jackson.
Both teams continued to improve individual scores in
preparation for the district and region meets later in
October. Hannah Scruton paced the girls by running a
26:08 for 41st place. Caitlin Blackwell and Chloe
Cunningham both ran well with times of 29:10 and 31:15.
Over 110 girls competed in the meet. For the boys, Caleb
Owen finished in 15th place with a time of 19:07.
Rounding out the top four were Matt Blaylock (20:27),
Brice Priestley (20:37), and Lee Barham (21:04). All of
our runners finished in the top half of the field. This
week the team will travel to Dyer County for the meet
there on Tuesday, September 21. These young people along
with their teammates practice hard after school in hot,
humid conditions. We appreciate their representing
McKenzie High School and their dedication to cross
country.
The golf teams ended their regular season last week with
two matches. Last Monday, the girls split with Milan and
Westview. Kristi Petering and Tish Brown shot 52 and 54
respectively. The boys also split with the same two
teams. They were led by Carson Rider who fired a 39. The
teams completed their regular season at home against
Camden. The girls evened their record at 8-8 in the win
over the Lady Lions. Kristi Petering was the medalist
with a 46. The boys ended the regular season with a win
over the Lions. Their record is 19-2. Craig Broadbent
was the medalist with a 37. Jake Brown followed with a
38. The boys' team played in the district tournament on
Monday. The top three schools qualify for the region
which will be played on Monday, September 27, at Shiloh
Golf Course near Adamsville.
This week we will have Homecoming at McKenzie High
School with our game against Trenton-Peabody High
School. Homerooms nominated the girls to consider for
the royalty. The M-Club selected the five members of the
court. This year's court includes Brandi Burke, Rachael
Clark, Megan Hutchison, Rema Salameh, and Heidi Thomas.
The crowning of the queen will be this Friday beginning
promptly at 7:00 P.M. After the game, we will have a
dance at the high school. Admission is $5.00 for MHS
students and their dates only. The dance will end at
midnight.
Parents of seniors should note some of the changes made
by the legislature regarding the Tennessee Education
Lottery Scholarship Program. To qualify for the
Tennessee Hope Scholarship, entering college freshmen
(high school class of 2005) must have at least a 21 ACT
(980 SAT) or an overall unweighted 3.0 grade point
average. This is a change from last year's 19 ACT
minimum score. The Hope Scholarship is $3000 for 4-year
institutions and $1500 for 2-year institutions. The
General Assembly Merit Scholarship is a $1000 supplement
to the Hope Scholarship. Entering freshmen must have at
least a 3.75 GPA and a 29 ACT (1280 SAT). The Need-Based
Supplemental Award is a $1000 supplement to the Hope
Scholarship. Students must meet the Hope Scholarship
requirements and must have parents' adjusted gross
income or independent student's (and spouse's) adjusted
gross income of $36,000 or less on the 2004 IRS 1040.
Students who plan to attend one of the Tennessee
Technology Centers may apply for the Wilder-Naifeh
Technical Skills Grant. The award amount is $1250 or no
more than the cost of attendance. Previous Hope
Scholarship recipients are ineligible. The final award
is the Tennessee Hope Access Grant. The award amount is
$2000 for 4-year institutions and $1250 for 2-year
institutions. With this grant entering freshmen must
have at least an unweighted 2.75 GPA and 18 ACT and must
have parents' adjusted gross income of $36,000 or less
on the 2004 IRS 1040. This grant is non-renewable, but
students may receive further money by meeting the Hope
Scholarship renewal criteria. Of high interest to
parents and students are the renewal criteria of the
Tennessee Hope Scholarship. A student's eligibility
shall be reviewed at the end of the semester in which
the student has attempted a total of 24, 48, 72, 96, and
120 semester hours. A student must have a cumulative GPA
of 2.75 after 24 attempted semester hours. He/She must
have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 after 48, 72, 96, and 120
attempted semester hours. He/She must be enrolled in
fall and spring semesters and maintain satisfactory
academic progress. Once the scholarship is lost, it
cannot be reclaimed. A student can qualify for the
various scholarships by completing the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Parents may call the
school if they have questions.
The Rebel football team evened its Region 6-2A record to
1-1 with a hard-fought 35-14 victory over the host
Adamsville Cardinals. The Rebels started slowly as the
Cardinals flexed their muscles in the first half by
jumping out to a 14-0 lead. Particularly impressive for
the Cardinals was a 93-yard opening drive that
culminated in their first score. The Rebel faithful were
silenced when the Cardinals matched that score with
another on their third possession. The Rebels countered
with two touchdowns of their own in the second quarter.
A two-point conversion on the first score accounted for
the eventual 15-14 halftime lead. The offense continued
to click in the second half and scored on their first
possession to make the score 22-14. The defense also
came to life the second half and yielded very little
yardage to the Cardinals who struggled for first downs.
The improved defense and the ball-control offense were
the main factors for success for the Rebels who upped
their record to 3-1 overall. For the Rebels, Drew Hayes
had 19 completions in 31 attempts for 291 yards. He
threw primarily to Randy Lacey, Clint Anderson, and Greg
Pruiett. This week the Rebels will celebrate their
Homecoming with a clash with Trenton Peabody High
School. This non-region game will begin at 7:30 P.M. at
Rebel Stadium.
As always, I hope everyone has a good week.
