Mrs. Jackie Carr recently had her
economics/international business marketing class and the
accounting class complete an essay about financial
responsibility. The essay is the product for a contest
sponsored by the Securities Division of the State of
Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance. The
Securities Division is responsible for maintaining the
integrity of the securities market and to protect
investors. The Division also promotes investor education
and the prevention of fraud in the securities industry.
Students in Mrs. Carr's classes had to write a 1000-word
essay on the topic of how and why they handle money the
way they do and to outline their financial goals. The
essay topic asked students to address several key ideas
including the fact that personal bankruptcy filings
nationwide are the highest ever and Tennessee's
bankruptcy filings are twice the national average. As
the essay topic introduction stated, as of March 2004,
Americans had accumulated over 755 billion dollars in
debt through revolving credit accounts. Students had to
ponder and address influences on their attitude toward
money, their knowledge of money and the importance of
fiscal solvency, and goals to help them reach immediate
and long-term financial goals. Statewide winners will be
announced on October 25, 2004 with a $1500 savings bond
for 1st prize, a $1000 savings bond for 2nd prize, and a
$500 savings bond for 3rd prize. This contest is an
excellent reflective assignment to help students to
clarify the idea of credit and financial responsibility.
The boys' golf team played in the District 14 Golf
tournament at the Tennessee River Golf Course in Decatur
County last Monday. They qualified for the regional golf
tournament at Shiloh Golf Course on Monday, September
27. Representing our school were Beau Brown (78), Craig
Broadbent (80), Justin Wilson (83), Jake Brown (85), and
Marshall Smith (90). The top four scores combined to
make an overall team score of 326. Our team trailed last
year's state championship team, the Lexington Tigers, by
16 strokes. The regional tournament is played at
Adamsville this year. Good luck to them in this very
demanding region. The girls will have their regional
meet at Adamsville on Tuesday, September 28. We also
wish them the best.
The cross country team competed in the Dyer County
Invitational Meet on Tuesday. For the girls, Hannah
Scruton placed 46th with a time of 25:45. Caitlin
Blackwell ran a 31:26 to finish 71st. The boys also
continued to improve their individual and collective
scores. Three of our Rebels ran sub-20 minute times with
Caleb Owen (18:50), Matt Blaylock (19:40), and Chase
Mitchell (19:58) finishing 18th, 30th, and 34th
respectively. Brice Priestley completed the runners that
placed with a 20:17 for 42nd place time. This week the
team will travel to the Ag Center in Jackson to compete
in a meet there.
The band began its competition season on September 18
when they traveled to Milan for the Milan Marching Band
Invitational. The first few competitions enable the band
to correct its marching mistakes and upgrade its music
in preparation for the state competition in Murfreesboro
on October 30. Two outstanding areas for the band were
with the percussion and field commander. The percussion
finished second as did sophomore field commander Lauren
Morris. This past weekend the band went to the Waverly
Invitational. Out of the five bands competing in our
category, the band finished second; the percussion
placed first; our drum major earned third; and our guard
also earned third. Congratulations to them as they
continue to improve.
The football team suffered its second loss of the season
with a 32-27 defeat at the hands of Peabody High School.
The Rebels spotted the Golden Tide an early 20-0 lead
and looked to be headed toward a thrashing. Instead the
team countered with two second quarter touchdowns to
trail 20-14 at halftime. The two teams swapped
touchdowns in the third period as Peabody continued to
lead 26-20 going into the last canto. The Rebels took
their sole lead of the night with a touchdown and extra
point that put them ahead 27-26. However, this was a
night that Peabody refused to give in. They again
marched down the field and scored the go ahead
touchdown. The Rebels showed their grit as they stayed
an attempt to put the finishing touches on the Golden
Ride with their own score. A quarterback sneak on fourth
down at the Peabody four-yard line was inches short and
the Tide picked up the win. The Rebels record now stands
at 3-2 with a big 6-2A game this Friday at home against
Riverside. Game time is 7:30 P.M.
Congratulations to Rachael Clark. Rachael was awarded
Homecoming queen Friday night prior to the game. Rachael
was joined in her court with Brandi Burke, Megan
Hutchison, Rema Salameh, and Heidi Thomas.
Ms Ladona Herrin issued her monthly newsletter last week
to all seniors who came by her office to pick them up.
The newsletter is a wealth of information about the
dates for recruiting visits on campus, available
scholarships, ACT information, upcoming events, and
other similar information. Also noteworthy is the
website www.fastweb.com. With the escalating cost of a
college education, students and parents need to explore
every avenue to make college more affordable. The above
site provides a free search of 600,000 scholarships and
over 4000 colleges. I suggest that parents read the
newsletter carefully to stay abreast of school
happenings and opportunities available.
Another newsletter that went out last week was that of
the Business Professionals of America. This club is
composed of students who have taken some of our
business-related classes here at school. Those classes
may include accounting, marketing, international
business, keyboarding, desktop publishing, spread sheet
applications, and document design. The newsletter gives
an overview of the club, its involvement in fundraising
from participation in contests, the offices, and the
upcoming conference. Junior Lee Barham created the
design of the newsletter which is neatly and expertly
done. B.P.A. sponsor is Jeanine Lowe.
And as always, I hope everyone has a great week.
