Last Monday the golf teams traveled to Sharon for a
four-way golf match. The girls' team led by Kristi
Petering with a 52 defeated Union City, but lost to
Martin Westview. The boys' team continued their winning
ways defeating Gibson County, Martin Westview, and Union
City. The Rebels were led by medalist Beau Brown who
shot a 38 with strong support from junior Justin
Petering who scored a 40 over the par 37 course. On
Tuesday the teams returned to Carroll Lake for matches
with Henry County and Huntingdon. The girls split with
the visiting teams defeating Huntingdon, but losing to
Henry County. Craig Broadbent and Marshall Smith paced
the Rebels in defeating the two visitors with 37's to
earn medalist distinction. The team defeated Henry
County by 30 and Huntingdon by 52. The girls' record is
now 5-6. The boys' record stands at 16-0. This week they
play at Riverside on Tuesday and at Milan next Monday
against Milan and Martin Westview.
Parent-Teacher Conference is this Thursday, September 9,
from 3:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.m. The date is the end of the
41/2 week period. Parents will receive a progress report
for the first quarter performance of their child, along
with a teacher's analysis of the strengths and
weaknesses of the student. Parents will also be able to
provide needed input as to their concerns and their
insights. It is critical for parents to attend this
meeting with teachers.
The marketing classes are selling ads to businesses and
industries in our area for the yearbook. These ads help
to defray the cost of the yearbook for our students and
provide a good advertising opportunity for our patrons.
Also, the yearbook will soon be selling parent ads to
senior parents. This section of the yearbook has been a
popular venue for parents to recognize and express their
love to their graduating senior. A letter to parents
will be available at the Parent-Teacher Conference and
during homeroom.
On Thursday, September 9, we will take school day
pictures. All students in grades 9 through 11 will have
their photograph taken for our yearbook. Lifetouch
Photography will again be our photographer for this
sitting. On Tuesday, we will send home envelopes for
parents to choose what option they may want, if they
purchase photographs. We will use the pre-pay plan so
students will need money on the day of the photographs.
All checks should be made payable to Lifetouch
Photography.
This Friday, September 10, the representative with Ken-Tenn
Sports will be here during lunch to take orders for
letter jackets. Students who have earned academic or
athletic letters may purchase a jacket at this time.
Students must make a deposit of $60.00 at this time to
place an order. All checks are payable to Ken-Tenn
Sports.
The cross country team will run in its first meet on
Tuesday, September 9. They will follow this on Monday,
September 13, with a meet at Union University. Our teams
should be competitive this year with several returning
lettermen. Their season will culminate in the regional
meet in late October.
Ms. Herrin has received information packets and
applications to the 2005 Governor's Schools of
Tennessee. The Governor's Schools include nine
residential programs for gifted and talented high school
students. The tuition-free schools will be conducted
during the summer of 2005 at universities across the
state. Areas of study include science, humanities,
orchestral music/wind ensemble/choral
music/theater/visual arts/ballet, international studies,
Tennessee Heritage, manufacturing, prospective teaching,
information technology leadership, and agricultural
science. Students chosen will receive instruction from
challenging teachers, distinguished professors, and
practicing professionals in each field. The application
deadline is December 17, 2004, but interested 10th and
11th grade students need to begin the process as soon as
possible. See Ms. Herrin for details.
On Friday, our school passed out Federal Form 874 to all
students. Parents will need to complete this brief form
and sign it for students to return to the school. 874
Forms allow us to receive additional federal funds for
students who qualify. However, all students must
complete the form for us to apply for the money. Please
complete and return as soon as possible.

The McKenzie Rebel football team faced a much-improved
Camden Lion team on Friday night in its initial game in
Region 6-2A. The Lions showed early the reason that they
have been the talk pre-season as a dark horse to take
the crown in the region. A stronger, quicker, faster
Lion team took the battle to the home team and jumped
out to a 17-0 lead. The Rebels maintained their
composure and battled back with 10 second quarter points
to trail the visitors by a 17-10 margin. The Rebels lost
no time in evening the score at 17 as they drove the
ball the length of the field to begin the second half.
The Lions also showed its grit by forging ahead 24-17
after they returned the kick-off to the Rebel 33 yard
line to set up a short scoring drive. Again the Rebels
answered and knotted the score at 24. The Lions remained
undeterred and marched the ball into the end zone to
complete the scoring. The Rebels did not go down
quietly. They muscled the ball to the Lion 10 yard line
with a little more than a minute left in the contest,
but suffered a turnover to end the scoring threat.
I could not be prouder of these young men even if they
had won. They showed the determination and grit of a
hungry team and were unflappable even when behind. I
think more than anything else they proved that the team
will be a force to be reckoned with in the weeks ahead.
This week the team travels to Newbern to confront the
Choctaws of Dyer County at 7:30 on Friday. I encourage
everyone to make the trip to watch the Rebels bounce
back.
As always, I hope everyone has a good week.
