Rebels Claim First Soccer Win, 1- 0  Over JCS

When journeying down the road to new athletic endeavors, the fruits of success are at best unripened, at worst withered.
If that's the case, McKenzie's soccer team must be traveling on fertile ground. The Rebel soccer team captured a 1-0 victory over visiting Jackson Christian School, the first triumph in school history.

Sophomore Caleb Owen knocked in the only McKenzie goal mid way in the first half and the Rebel defense made it stand up. MHS coach George Ognibene said the victory can be attributed to the team's work ethic.

"I thought our kids played well," Ognibene said. "We've gotten better and we've had opportunities."

The Rebels, 1-4, suffered a 2-0 setback at Trenton, a game the coach felt McKenzie had a shot at. The Rebs succumbed the the Tide's speed and two late goals were the difference. Last Tuesday, the Rebels made JCS pay.

"We had opportunities to shoot and score at Trenton," the coach said. "We got it again at JCS and made the most of it."
The Eagles field a proven side, a team that plays soccer year round.

"They've been around a while those kids play club soccer and soccer during the summer," the coach said. "This was a good win for us; I think it will build our confidence."

One of the things that was most appealing was the fact that when the Rebels were introduced to an opportunity, they cashed in.

"We made opportunities for ourselves in the game," Ognibene said. "We are getting better at practice and it is showing in games."

McKenzie's defense also is making strides.

"I'm happy with the way our defense is playing right now," said Ognibene. "Andrew Wilson has played well and Kenny Carey has stepped in for a kid who got hurt and has stepped up."

Carey has filled in for John Rhodes. Rhodes sustained a stress injury, but is due back soon, which creates a good kind of problem for Ognibene.

"We are going to have trouble find places for people to play when Rhodes gets back," he said. "But depth is always good."

Jake Brown earned his first shutout in goal and has performed well there.

"Jake has gotten better," Ognibene said. "We knew he was an athletic kid and this should boost his confidence; we think he'll continue to get better."

The coach hopes his team can build on this victory.

"Anytime you get a win, it's good and to beat a program like JCS, it boosts your confidence," Ognibene said. "When you get one win, you want more. I hope we can come off the break and finish off these last five games strong. I'm tickled for the kids and I hope this has created some excitement."

  Gilmer Takes Reins at Central

For nearly a generation, Rod Sturdivant has been football coach at Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central High School.

He has probably coached the sons of some players he coached. But this August, there will be a different set of ears in the sideline headphones. Wednesday morning, Central High School football players were introduced to a new football coach, Tim Gilmer, who comes to the Tigers' den from University School of Jackson.

Sturdivant won a state championship and ventured to the state finals two other times. Gilmer knows coming in behind such a dossier will be tough, but it's a challenge he embraces.

"It's tough to follow basically a legend here," said Gilmer. "There are going to be a lot of expectations, but there won't be any more pressure on me than I can put on myself."

Gilmer's pedigree is impressive as well. He was a strength coach as well as defensive coordinator for USJ, one of Central's principal rivals. He also coached at Lambuth University. Prior to his coaching stint, he played a year of professional football in Europe and before that was a standout linebacker for Maryville College and Hickman County High School.

"I was in a good situation at USJ and wouldn't have left there for just any job," Gilmer said. "I wouldn't be here if the conditions to be successful weren't in place."

Gilmer said his prime focus will be to familiarize himself with the players and begin a strength and conditioning regimen, something he says he enjoys doing. He lamented the fact that he won't have a spring workout with the team, but is confident that Sturdivant provided a more-than-adequate spring session for the players.

The coach hopes to use the summer and pre-season to develop the team.

"It would have been nice to a spring practice, but I know they got good work in and coach Sturdivant did a good job on fundamentals," he said. "We'll see what kind of personnel we have and develop and offense that will give us the greatest chance to be successful."

Sturdivant, the former coach who was recently tabbed as Hollow Rock-Bruceton Director of Schools, says Gilmer is the right man for the job. And, he said thanks to his new post, he has the rare opportunity to pick his successor.

"I promised we'd find someone to teach hard work, discipline and someone who cares about you not just as players but as young men," said Sturdivant. "We found that person in Tim Gilmer. He will teach you how to be winners."

Gilmer and his wife Amber have three girls and plan on moving to Bruceton soon. The coach will begin his conditioning program this week with the players.

"This is one of the places I always thought it would be great to be a head coach," Gilmer said. "And when your principal (Jackie McGee) and superintendent are ex-coaches, you know it has to be a great situation."
