  Ghyers Granny Lifts Rebels -
Junior Cracks Two-Out Shot for Win over Hawks

MILAN - McKenzie's baseball team had been journeying down a rough path, littered with hard luck and miscues.

But the Rebels showed signs last week of righting the ship. McKenzie finished second in the Milan Physical Therapy Tournament, bowing to the host Bulldogs 13-3 in the championship on Saturday.

The Rebels committed too many errors and couldn't establish any offense against the Bulldogs.

It was in stark contrast to Friday's pool game between the Rebels and Jackson-South Side. McKenzie battled back and forth with the Hawks before Rebel junior catcher Mark Ghyers provided some thrills.

Ghyers came to the plate with two away in the sixth, his team trailing 6-4 and in danger of going home without hardware. Ghyers quickly fell behind 0-2, but worked a full count with two out. Then South Side southpaw Derek Blackwood shook off a sign. His offering was a hanging curve ball that Ghyers parked over the 325 sign in left field.

The Rebel junior just blasted a grand slam home run and pushed the Rebels in front 8-6. Sophomore Drew Hayes took the hill in the top of the seventh and closed it down, preserving the victory.

The Rebels led 3-2 in the second frame. Senior second sacker John French edged the Rebs in front when he drove in Clint Manns, who also reached on a single. But a two run error in the third gave the Hawks a 4-3 lead. South Side extended its lead when Kirk Johnson launched a two-run shot for the 6-3 lead in the sixth.

In the Rebel sixth, Jordan Trull walked, but was retired at second on Beau Brown's fielder's choice. Robert Jones reached on an error, but drove in Brown, who wound up on third after a passed ball and wild pitch.

Hayes singled, then Jake Smith walked to load the bases for Ghyers.

The Rebels are 8-17 as a result of the tournament. In earlier action:

McKenzie 3
The Rebels scattered seven hits, but couldn't solve the Chargers, who claimed their second decision of the season over the Rebels.
Hayes doubled while Jones, Smith, Ghyers, Manns, Trull and Campbell each singled for the Rebels.

McKenzie 10
Henry Co. 4
John French homered and went 2-5 while Jordan Trull homered in a 2-3 outing as the Rebels atoned for last week's loss to the Patriots.
Ghyers was 2-4 while Hayes and Manns each singled.

Bethel Sweeps Third Straight KIAC Series

Make it nine straight KIAC wins and 21 of their last 27 for the Bethel College baseball team. This past weekend, the 'Cats swept Mid-Continent College for their third straight conference sweep.
On Friday, the Wildcats faced off against the KIAC's Pitcher of the Week Jonathan Noyes of MCC and posted a 9-5 win over Mid-Continent. Bethel pounded the talented hurler, who allowed BC 10 hits, seven runs in 6.0 innings of action. Bethel's Hunter Pingston improved his record to 5-0 this season with 5.2 innings of action. Pingston allowed six hits and three runs. Offensively, Phillip Roberts led the team going 3-for-3 from the plate with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Justin Stafford had two hits and drove in two runs for the 'Cats. Oakey Gaskill, Shaine Thurman, and Jamie Burgess all had two hits for Bethel.

Saturday, the team celebrated Senior Day with a series sweep over the Cougars. Bethel won 12-7 and 11-1, respectively. In game one, Bethel struck early scoring one run in the first and four more in the second and held off a comeback by MCC to record the victory. Fittingly enough, two of the seniors led the way for the 'Cats offensively. Justin Stafford and Mark Aldridge both pounded out three hits each, drove in three runs apiece and each scored two runs in the win. Stafford connected on his first home run of the season and pounded out two doubles. Aldrige also ripped a double in the win. Josh Langley improved to 7-4 on the season, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits, six runs (two earned), while fanning three hitters.

Bethel took the finale of the series 11-1. Bethel posted eight runs in the third and three more in the fourth, and Aaron Johnson pitched a gem to send Mid-Continent College packing early. Again, the seniors stepped up to led BC to the win. Jason Yost was 2-for-3 from the plate with a homerun and two runs scored.

Jamie Cregar hit a two-run shot for the 'Cats. Jamie Burgess drove in three runs, while Oakey Gaskill and Matt Retherford each had two RBI for Bethel. Aaron Johnson (4-1) pitched all 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, one run, while striking out four hitters.
Bethel runs its record to 23-17-2 on the season and a league best 11-1. The series sweep sets up a showdown between the Wildcats and KIAC baseball powerhouse Spalding University during the last weekend of April. Spalding is currently 6-1 in KIAC play. The winner of that series will earn an automatic berth to the NAIA Region XII tournament and will be the top seed in the KIAC tournament. Bethel will have this weekend off to prepare for final exams and to get ready for the battle with Spalding. Bethel will travel to Pulaski on Wednesday to face Martin Methodist College.
