  Trull, Storm Third in Nation

The Dyersburg Storm's 14-under AAU basketball team finished third in the National AAU Division 2 championships last week.

The event took place in Orlando, Fla. with McKenzie's Anna Trull as a member of the Storm.

Trull said the experience of playing for a national championship was inspirational.

"I never thought I would have a a chance to do something like that," she said. "I think it's going to help me a whole lot (as a high school player) because I learned so much.

Trull averaged 11 points per game and had a personal best 17 against the Pennsylvania Mavericks. She drained five triples in that game.

In pool play, the Storm knocked off the Connecticut Breeze, then the Wisconsin Somerset Spartans, the Georgia Pearls and the West Virginia Fairmont Waves. The lone pool-play loss was to the Virginia Blue Angels.

The Storm opened the tournament defeating the Tennessee Tigers 40-35. The Storm next drew North Carolina-Garner Road YMCA. The Storm advanced with a 58-55 win. In its most one-sided victory of the tournament, the Storm defeated the Penn.-Mar. Mavericks from Maryland, 66-53.

In the semifinal round, the Storm succumbed to the North Carolina Express 61-51.

"(Finishing third) was disappointing, but not to me because I'm from a small town, so third is a good thing," she said.

Considering that the Storm was third among 39 teams at the national tournament and beat out hundreds of other teams across the country.

Trull said she didn't feel like a fish out of water during the national competition. She also said she wasn't really surprised by anything she saw there.

"It was pretty much what I expected," she said. "There were some quick players and it was hard and challenging, but they played like I wanted - fast paced."

Sometimes, being an outsider on a team carries with it problems. Not for Trull, who felt at home with her Dyersburg teammates.

"It was awesome," she said of their embrace. "They made me feel like one of them and didn't treat me any different."

During her week in Central Florida, Trull said she learned the value of defense and blocking out. She says she hopes to apply the positives from here experience when basketball season rolls around next November.

"I'm looking forward to stepping up and being a leader," she said. "I want to use what I've learned and I want to help the younger kids who are going to be freshman."

McKenzie 2-0 at State Tourney

McKenzie's 18-19-year Senior Babe Ruth team captured two state-tournament wins and is on the precipice of playing for a state championship.

McKenzie is taking part for the second straight year in the event, held at Lewisburg.

The locals defeated the host team Friday evening in the opening round 4-0 behind strong pitching from Brian Winston and a three-RBI night from Chris Wall.

In Sunday's game, Drew Hayes pitched and helped lead the McKenzie team to a 5-4 decision over Union City.

In that game, which McKenzie was the visitors on the scoreboard, Union City had the bases loaded in its half of the seventh an there was only one out. A UC hitter drove a ball deep to centerfield where Jake Smith made the catch and threw out the runner tagging from second to end the game. Winston, the third baseman in this game, was awaiting the throw and made the easy tag to help advance McKenzie in winners-bracket play.

"We're playing really well right now," said McKenzie coach Kyle Manns. "We're hitting real well and we are getting good pitching."

McKenzie played Monday and if it won then, it would move to the championship round and would have to lose twice to be eliminated.

"We really appreciate the support of the people and the businesses that helped get us here," said Manns.

Lady Rebels Stress Conditioning, Fundamentals

McKenzie girls' basketball coach Joan Albury is getting better acquainted with her Lady Rebel team.

And they are getting better acquainted with Albury, too.

One thing the Lady Rebels know is that they are going to be in shape when the season starts. Conditioning has been word in the MHS camp and the players aren't complaining. In fact, after a weightlifting session at the Kermit Holland Sportsplex, the girls had a pretty good attitude. In fact, they looked like they were having fun.

"The kids have responded really well; they've done everything I've asked and they are always positive," Albury said. "We're not real big, so we have to do our best to be prepared to be in shape and outrun people."

Albury expects the team to be a pressing, full-court team next year to compensate for the lack of size in the Lady Rebel squad. She says this year's Lady Rebs will be up and down the floor this season.

But finding the right balance at practice without scaring off the players has been an interesting exercise.

"We don't want to burn them out too early," the coach said. "We want them to peak in their best shape when the season starts."

Weeks ago, after the West Carroll camp, Albury noticed how the Lady Rebels were huffing and puffing and it wasn't even halftime yet. The coach uses that example to demonstrate that there is method to her madness.

"If we are going to run, then we have to focus on conditioning," the coach said.

The team has worked three days a week during the summer, except for the recent dead period. And when the kids aren't practicing, Albury encourages the team to be active (she admonishes the girls to go for a walk, jog or play tennis) when they aren't practicing.

Attendance this summer has been good. But the summer is full of pitfalls, like vacations and church-related functions. In fact, this week, four Lady Rebels will be on missionary trips.

"In the summer, you always have to make some adjustments," Albury said. "We always expect that. I'm just pleased we have kids that want to do (mission trips)."

The Lady Rebels will return to the practice court this week and then head to a team camp at Martin-Westview.

"We've put in two offenses but we haven't gone full speed with them, just walk up speed againt mock defenses," said Albury. "But they are getting there. I hope they will be able to pick up what we learned in time for the camp."

If nothing else, the Lady Rebels will be fundamental.

"With the way we have been working fundamentals, they are getting there," Albury said. "We have to be solid passers and dribblers."
