Fillies Edge Lady Rebs in Extra Innings

Huntingdon had been somewhat anemic with its bats recently, but found the mark at McKenzie's expense last Wednesday.
The Fillies managed six hits in a 10-inning affair as they handed the host Lady Rebels a 3-2 non-district loss.

Huntingdon pieced together a tenuous 2-0 lead when MHS sophomore Jalisa Brown knotted the score with her two-run, two-out double in the sixth. The two teams dueled to the 10th inning when the rules call for putting a runner on second to start the inning. HHS sophomore Casey Henson was poised to score when her twin sister Courtney drove her home with an RBI double. The Fillies led 3-2 and McKenzie was at the plate.

Brooke Cole took her place on second and reached third when Jill Taylor reached on an error. Lady Rebel junior Carol Perritt laced a rocket up the middle, but it found the glove of pitcher Megan Rush for the third out. The Fillies had captured a stunner, their first victory over the season.

It was a frustrating day for McKenzie, who hit the ball well, but just couldn't drive them home. The Lady Rebels stranded 12 runners and pounded out 10 hits. And they started early. Junior Brittany Carpenter singled, stole second and reached third on NiCole West's single. That's where the two stayed.

In the second, McKenzie loaded the bases. Brooke Cole singled, Kayla Bomar reached on a fielder's choice and Carpenter got in with an infield hit, but, with two outs, a fielder's choice ended that campaign.

West managed a bunt single to start the MHS third and Courtney Creasy reached on an error, but two fly balls ended that threat. In the fourth, Lauren Perrit singled, Carpenter got in via the error, but an infield fly and an unassisted putout stymied that scoring chance.

MiRanda West had a two-out single in the fifth but was stuck on base. McKenzie bats went dormant until the ninth inning when Courtney Creasy ripped a two-out double. MiRanda West walked, but a flyout ended the threat.

The Fillies scored both of their runs in the third when Courtney Henson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Then Brooke Pritchard cracked an RBI double for the 2-0 lead.

Carpenter was the top hitter for MHS. She was 4-6. NiCole West was 2-5. Brown had a hit and two RBI. MiRanda West, Creasy and Cole each had a hit. Lauren Perritt struck out 14 in 10 complete innings, walked five and allowed only six hits.

Pritchard led the Fillies with two hits and an RBI. Rush, Clark, Courtney Henson and Ashlee Porter each had hits.. Henson had two RBI. Rush struck out seven and walked two.
In other action:

Camden 4
McKenzie 3

The Lady Rebels found themselves in a 4-0 hole, tried to dig out, but fell a run short against the visiting Camden Lady Lions.
Camden scored a pair of runs in the fourth because of errors, and two more in the fifth because of timely hitting.

McKenzie had a big sixth, however. Brittany Carpenter, Carol Perritt, NiCole West and Jalisa Brown strung together four straight singles. Brown's knock scored two runs. With two out, Brooke Cole added an RBI single. The tying run was thrown out at the plate, ending the inning.

Carpenter was 2-for-4 and Cole was 2-for-3 to lead the Lady Rebels, who fall to 7-3 on the season, 1-1 in District 11AA.
In earlier action:

McKenzie 10
Milan 5

The Lady Rebels pounded out 13 hits and captured their first District 11AA victory of the season.

Brittany Carpenter, NiCole West, Jalisa Brown, MiRanda West, Brooke Cole and Lauren Perritt each had two hits to lead MHS. Perritt, MiRanda West and KaylaBomar each had two RBI. Brown had a double for the Lady Rebs.

McKenzie is at the Jackson-South Side tournament this weekend.

  Central Honors Basketball Athletes

Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central's basketball banquet was an exercise in celebration and remembrance.

The event started on a somber note as the Central cheerleaders were recognized. The most-outstanding cheerleader award was given posthumously to Jessie Cole, who was tragically killed in a car accident two months ago. Robert and Lisa Cole received her award and uniform and applause from a caring and concerned crowd. A brief video, sharing the life of Cole, was shown to the audience.

"We will always have the memories of Jessie," said cheerleader sponsor Debbie Fox. "She was always happy and enjoyed life. We could always count on her to do a job. She gave us great leadership and was such a positive influence. We will remember the happy times and we will remember a great girl."

Henceforth, Central's outstanding cheerleaders will be given the Jessie Cole Award. The award will recognize spirit, leadership and dedication. This year it went to three of the "Four Js," Jordan Fox, Joanna Thedford and Jeannie Noles.

Central girls' basketball coach Dennis Chapman said he wanted to dwell on the positives of this season.

"The girls learned to get along as a team and that's reflective of our seniors, Whitney Owens and Kathy Doupis," the coach said. "Everybody was at practice and there weren't many days where people missed practice or were late."

Chapman said an overtime loss to West Carroll helped spark the team.

"And for two years in a row, we were in the district championship," Chapman said. "This is the second year in a row that we've had three on the all-district team and we have some very positive things going with the program."

Heaven Wilks was named best defense, Hannah Kee earned athletic achievement, Owens claimed best offense and Doupis won best free throws and best field goal percentage.

Central boys' coach Chris Finley also pointed out the positive aspects to his team. The Tigers have been to the region four years in a row, district champs one year, finalists two years and been to the regional semifinals.

"These seniors and juniors have created high expectations," Finley said. "We have had double digit wins for four straight years and these kids have done a lot for Bruceton basketball."

Finley said this team came together after a pillow fight at summer camp.

"I called my brother," Finley said. "I told him that if we didn't kill each other, we'd be all right."

Rookie of the year was given to Tanner Stepp; Russell Noles was honored as sixth man, Orey Willis had the most steals; Kerry Hunt was named best offensive player; Zac Davis was tabbed as best defensive player. Albiro King had the most rebounds.

"The seniors and alumni have paved a pretty good path," Finley said. "We have a lot of high expectations from these juniors, sophomores and freshmen."

The rivalry between Bethel College and Indiana University Southeast is a very intense one in each sport in which they face off. This past weekend was no different as the Wildcats won a key KIAC conference baseball series, taking 2 of 3 from the visiting Grenadiers.

In the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, Bethel scored five runs in the first two innings en route to a 7-3 win over IUS. Jamie Burgess was perfect from the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, triple and a run batted in. Oakey Gaskill, Wade Maddox and Jared Searcy each pounded out two hits, while Matt Retherford drove in two runs for Bethel. Josh Langley picked up the win pitching five solid innings allowing three runs and striking out five hitters. Chris Blackwood pitched a perfect seventh inning, striking out a batter, to earn his second save of the season.

In the second game of the afternoon, Gaskill hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 7-5 lead for the Wildcats. Hunter Pingston pitched two innings of relief to earn the victory for Bethel.

In the finale of the series, IUS pounded out 17 hits in defeating the Wildcats 16-8. IUS scored six runs in the 3rd inning and seven more in the seventh inning to secure the win. Gaskill led the Cats in hitting, going 3-for-4 from the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. Wade Maddox and Jason Yost both had two hits for Bethel. Maddox also drove in a pair during the game. Matt Wear took the loss, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing six hits and six earned runs.
