  Rebels Suffer 11AA Setbacks

By Jim Steele

Hot hitters and tough breaks made the going rough for the McKenzie Rebels' baseball team last week.

Milan seemingly found every seem in its 17-4 victory at McKenzie while Riverside took advantage of timely hitting late in the game to drop the Rebels 5-2.

The losses dropped McKenzie to 11-14 overall and 2-6 in District 11AA play. The Rebels will host Camden 5 p.m. Thursday in opening round of the double-elimination district tournament. After the preliminary round, tournament games will move to Milan.

"We had a tough couple of games and we've gotten ourselves in a hole, but it's not a hole we can't get out of," said McKenzie coach Josh Kee. "We have to beat everybody if we want a chance to go on and this will be a test of character for us."

Against Milan, the Rebels faced red-hot hurler Phillip White, who improved to 5-0 on the season. He also aided his own cause by cranking a homer.

Senior John French pounded his second blast of the year and Clint Manns added a two-run, fourth-inning shot for McKenzie. Drew Hayes was 2-3 while Jake Smith had a single.

Brent Ramsey was 2-4 for the Bulldogs with a homer. Daniel Beasley was 4-4. Seth Walls had two hits.

At Riverside, the Rebs led 2-1 into the sixth when things fell apart. The Panthers tacked on four runs to take the victory.

The Rebels had opportunities early, but couldn't get the timely hit to push the runs across.

Smith was 2-4 with a double. Manns was perfect in two plate appearances. Hayes was 1-3 with a double and senior Robert Jones was 1-4.

BC Takes No. 11 Spalding to Wire

Bethel Sports

It was sort of appropriate that Bethel College and Spalding University battled for the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crown on the day of the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Ky., oddly enough.

The race for the championship went down to the wire indeed. Both the Bethel College Wildcats and Spalding University Pelicans came into the finale of the season with only one conference loss. The winner of this series would claim the regular season KIAC baseball crown, earn the top seed in this week's KIAC Conference Tournament and qualify for next week's NAIA Region XII tournament. So, there was a lot on the line as the two teams took the field.

Unfortunately for the Wildcats, who battled the elements and the effects of a long road trip, Spalding took two of the three games to win the crown. And it came down to the last day of the three-game set to settle the issue.

On Friday afternoon, the two teams split in doubleheader action, with Spalding taking the opener 3-1 and the Wildcats taking the nightcap 4-3. Game one was a pitchers duel. Bethel struck first, as Matt Retherford belted a solo home run in the top half of the second inning to give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead. Spalding answered with runs in the third, fourth and sixth to take the 3-1 win. Bethel hurler Josh Langely pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits, three runs (two earned), while fanning three hitters. Spalding's Brad Davis also threw a complete game, giving up six hits, one run and striking out eight. Retherford was 3-for-3 for Bethel with the lone RBI and run scored.

Bethel won game two in dramatic fashion, as it came from behind and scored three runs in the top of the seventh to steal a 4-3 victory from the Pelicans. Dan Hall had two hits for Bethel including a home run while Shaine Thurman drove in two runs with a single as Bethel evened the series at 1-1. Chris Wall picked up the win in relief with one perfect inning of action. Bethel starter Aaron Johnson was solid, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out two.

So, the regular season crown, automatic berth to regionals and top seed in the tournament came down to the final game of the season. All was looking good for Bethel as they built a 4-2 lead heading to the seventh. Spalding, with the help of a costly Wildcat miscue, posted four runs in the seventh inning and held on to beat the Wildcats 6-4. Thurman and Jamie Burgess both pounded out two hits for Bethel and Oakey Gaskill drove in two runs for the Wildcats. Wall took the loss in relief.

Bethel falls to 26-20-2 on the season and to 12-3 in KIAC play. The 11th-ranked Spalding Pelicans improve to 44-15 on the season and to 11-2 in KIAC play. Bethel heads into this weeks KIAC baseball tournament as the No.2 seed and will open action on Wednesday afternoon against host Brescia University.

  Lady Rebels Edge Riverside 1-0
McKenzie Otherwise Struggles

McKenzie's last regular-season home softball game of 2004 was a thriller, to be sure.

The Lady Rebels and Riverside were locked up in a scoreless draw and neither team had real opportunities to do any damage...until the seventh inning.

That's when junior Carol Perritt, with one swing of the bat, laced the game-winning RBI single to top the Lady Panthers 1-0.
It was a much-needed district victory for McKenzie.

Riverside mounted a bit of a threat in its half of the seventh. The Lady Panthers had successive singles in the frame, but good defense by the Lady Rebels killed the threat. Centerfielder Courtney Wiggins gunned down a base runner on a force play for the first out, shortstop Brooke Cole ended the threat with a double play. She caught a pop fly and doubled the runner off first for the final out.

That's when McKenzie put on its rally cap. NiCole West led the inning off with a walk and took third when Courtney Creasy reached on an error. With runners on first and third, Perritt rocketed a deep fly ball to left field. The shot plated West and the Lady Rebels won the game.

Perritt had both McKenzie hits in the game. Junior Brittany Carpenter pitched well, scattering four hits and striking out five. In District 11AA play:

Lexington 3
McKenzie 0

The Lady Rebels suffered one bad inning and couldn't capitalize on breaks as the Lady Tigers stunned visiting McKenzie.

"It was a well-played game by both teams and both pitchers pitched well," said McKenzie coach Randy Thomas. "We had a couple of opportunities and didn't take advantage. They did take advantage of their opportunities."

Brittany Carpenter, Jalisa Brown, NiCole West, Courtney Creasy, Lauren Perritt and Courtney Wiggins each had a hit for the Lady Rebels. In the Tom Corbitt Tournament at Waverly:

Henry Co. 2
McKenzie 0

A red-hot Henry County team, featuring fireballer Michelle McWherter, limited McKenzie to two hits as the Lady Patriots won a close game.

McWherter fanned 12 McKenzie hitters. But Lady Rebel hurler NiCole West pitched a one-hitter and struck out six in the hard-luck loss.

Carpenter and Cole were each 1-3 in the game.

Chester Co. 2
McKenzie 1

Perhaps a future regional foe if McKenzie takes care of business, Chester County struggled, but topped the Lady Rebels.

Of the four Lady Eagle hits, three came in the first inning, accounting for both runs.

Brooke Cole had an RBI single in the first inning. After that, both defenses took over.

McKenzie had runners on second and third in the third inning but could not drive them in.

Murfreesboro-Riverdale 5
McKenzie 1

The Lady Rebels faced 3A Riverdale, a school that has won 37 games and enrolls 2,313 students, and held their own. McKenzie even led 1-0 before a tough inning essentially broke the Lady Rebels' back.

Riverdale benefited from a two-out grand slam homer to take a 4-1 lead and later tacked on another run.

Carol Perritt singled while Courtney Wiggins had an RBI base hit.

McKenzie 5
Clarksville-Northwest 1

Brittany Carpenter worked three innings and struck out four for the win while NiCole West worked three innings and struck out four for the save as the Lady Rebels cracked the win column.

Brooke Cole slammed her first homer of the year to lead the McKenzie hit parade. Carpenter, West, Creasy and Lauren Perritt each singled to lead the Lady Rebels.

McKenzie is 18-11 overall, 4-4 in district play and has wrapped up second place. Thursday, Lexington visits for a 5 p.m. start to open the 11AA softball tournament.
