McKenzie made a great showing at Dyer County...for 24
minutes.
Then the Rebels went on a bit of a siesta.
It was an impressive display for the Rebs early,
essentially doing what they wanted with a puzzled and
hapless Dyer County team. But the Rebels must learn that
two quarters does not a game make.
Other teams might not be so forgiving. Phoning in a half
can set a dangerous precedent, especially with the
rigors of 6-2A on the horizon. I can assure you that
Adamsville will exploit any MHS weakness this coming
week if the Rebels decide to go AWOL for a couple of
possessions.
Let's applaud the fact that the Rebels had a great
offensive outing and did a pretty good job bottling up
Dyer County phenom Andre Flowers. But 19 unanswered DC
points were a bit alarming for my taste.
Another break or two and the Choctaws might have ridden
a wave of confidence. When a team finds a spark,
sometimes that spark can be hard to douse. Give DC
credit for not quitting.
This week, it will be imperative for the Rebels to
maintain focus and concentrate on playing from the
opening kick to the final whistle. Any hiccups from here
on will have horrid consequences regarding potential
playoff berths.
Anyone can beat anyone and anyone can lose to anyone.
This applies to the Rebels. They can beat anyone, but on
given nights, they can be beaten. I would rather be the
victors than the vanquished. It's up to them.
As for the Bethel Wildcats, you have to feel for them.
They played a superb defensive game, but fell just short
to a quick Pikeville team, 23-22. I was impressed with
the speed of the game. Bethel has its share of athletes
and so did Pikeville. A good crowd was on hand, too.
They saw an entertaining battle. I hope the crowds
continue to support this team.
Last week, I was 21 of 26, which brings me to 52-69 for
the year. That's 76.8 percent. Improvement is evident,
but then again, not too many care. Here's to this week's
fare:
McKenzie over Adamsville: The Cardinals are improved,
but the Rebels should prevail in this one.
Huntingdon over Chester County: The Eagles circled this
game on their calendar last year. They will likely hope
that Mustang coach Mike Mansfield forgot to turn his
desk calendar this week.
Bruceton over South Fulton: The Tigers are feeling more
confidence after a good showing at USJ. They step closer
to the playoffs with a victory at Herndon Stadium Friday
night.
West Carroll over Gleason: The Bulldogs are better but
have nothing to show for it yet. West Carroll will face
a tough test, but should win.
Campbellsville over Bethel College: The Wildcats
suffered a heartbreaker against Pikeville last week and
could turn the corner this week. But this one is on the
road.
Tennessee over Florida: Okay, maybe I'm crazy, then
again, maybe I'm a believer. Look at what has happened
in college football lately. Anything can happen.
In other action, I see:
JCS over Middleton, USJ over Fayette Academy, Halls over
Greenfield, Camden over Riverside, Milan over Union
City, Dresden over Peabody, Humboldt over Westview,
South Side over Bolivar, Crockett Co. over SBEC, McNairy
over Liberty Magnet, Lexington over Fayette-Ware, Ripley
over Dyer County, Covington over Obion Central, Brighton
over Gibson County, Haywood Co. over North Side, JCM
over Dyersburg, Hardin County over Munford. |
